Hi I’m going to London this weekend and I was wondering if they was a cheaper alternatives to the tour bus. Is there any bus that goes round all the main tourist attractions. Thanks in advance.

If you tell us which of the many tourist attractions you are interested in, then I'm sure plenty of people will give you some routes.

TeapotCollection · 30/07/2021 12:43

Don’t know about that but please be aware that if you get on a normal bus you can’t pay with cash. We got caught out, didn’t have a clue this was the case

murasaki · 30/07/2021 12:45

The 390 bus goes from Victoria station past Marble Arch, lots of war memorials, Hyde park - only 1.50 on debit card contactless.

my commuter bus, but I took the inlaws on it and they enjoyed the view from the top deck,.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 30/07/2021 12:45

Well, there’s no bus that goes round all the tourist attractions so you need to be a little more specific.

ThatLibraryMiss · 30/07/2021 12:47

Part of the attraction of the tour bus is the commentary you get from the guide. You won't get that on a regular bus.

If you know where you want to go and it's just a question of getting from one attraction to another, download the free Citymapper app. It'll give you several alternatives from taxi through public transport to walking. It's very good, but it'll get through a lot of data in urban canyons.

The 15 is a good one (Tower Hill to Trafalgar Square)

DameAlyson · 30/07/2021 12:52

The No. 11 passes quite a few. Or the No. 15.

Have a look at this thread

I agree a proper London bus is preferable to a tour bus.

DogsSausages · 30/07/2021 12:57

If you tell us where you will be starting from and what you would like to see we can tell you which buses or river buses you can use

CupcakesK · 30/07/2021 12:57

I'm assuming if you are in London that you will have some kind of travel card? This will be valid on the buses so just hop on and off the ones you want. Alternatively, use a contactless card payment which will get capped to the day travel card cost no matter how much you use

Try these buses:
Number 12 - Westminster, Horse Guard's parade, Trafalgar Sq, Piccadilly circus

Then number 9 - Piccadilly circus, Hyde Park, Harrods, Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Palace

Or number 15 - Charing Cross station, Royal courts of justice, St Paul's, Tower of London

Thanks all we have already done the tour. Just wanted to visit a few more but cheaper. We are staying in the Hilton Olympia so will be catching any buses from there.

London bus fares have increased - they're now £1.55. They don't accept cash so you'll need either a contactless payment card or an Oyster card (one for each person travelling). Make sure you use the same card all day so that the daily fare cap applies.

The fare also covers a 'hopper' fare - you can make another (or several) bus trips within 1 hour of touching in the first time.

The daily price cap for buses is £4.65, the equivalent of 3 bus journeys. If you make more than 3 bus journeys in 1 day you won't be charged more than £4.65.

24 goes past parliament, up to Trafalgar Square and all the way to Hampstead Heath! You can pick it up at Victoria.

DogsSausages · 30/07/2021 13:24

I would cross the road and get the number 9, it will take you thru Kensington, Ken Gardens, Albert Hall, Hyde Parks, Green Park up to Piccadilly and Regent Street. The traffic can be terrible and some roads get closed if there are protests going on. Sometimes its quicker to get off the bus and walk. What attractions would you like to see, how much time will you have. You can probably get a few buses from opposite the hotel to Hyde Park Corner then walk to Buckingham Palace and The Mall they to Whitehall then pick up a cheap river boat thru to The Tower past the City. A lot depends on what you want to see..

Great thank you all for your help

The 15 is good - the Tower, St Paul's, the Courts, Trafalgar Sq.

One of my dcs favourite activities in London was to get on a random bus and see where it took us. We’d ride around for a bit and then get off when we saw a tube station and catch the tube back to wherever we actually wanted to be. Gave them a half hour sit down and I got to look at all the really old buildings, which I love doing.
