How to sterilise or disinfect laundry?

I really should know this, but I don't.
After a D+V episode or similar do you disinfect laundry? And if so how?
Thanks in advance

Wash the bedding at 60° if you feel the need.

Thortful · 30/07/2021 10:06

I never have, and brought up 4 children and all that went with it. I've been known to do a cold wash followed by a hot wash but that was more about avoiding staining.
If it bothers you, dettox and persil do a sterilising laundry wash but I've never felt the need.

wash items at 60 or hotter (bedding & towels).
a bit of dettol (the normal disinfecting liquid, laundry instruction on the bottle) for items that can't be washed hot.

I have Dettol laundry liquid that I use when DS has had a poo accident but that's becuase it's the only thing that gets rid of the smell fully.

Otherwise a normal wash would be fine for me. Maybe a couple of things at 60 if I was really worried.

MinnieJackson · 30/07/2021 10:08

Wash at 60 and a capful of the dettol laundry stuff

Comedycook · 30/07/2021 10:08

Laundry cleanser and/or a hot wash. Not everything can withstand a hot wash so that's when I use the laundry cleanser. The dettol one is good but expensive so I've switched to one I've found in B&M

Thanks for all the answers.
We've had worms, D+V and nits in this house of late, so I feel a bit like everything needs incineration not washing Grin

Oh you poor things!
We used napisan, dosage as per what was on the box instructions.

megletthesecond · 30/07/2021 10:24

I would wash it at 60° and leave it on the washing line for a couple of days.

Itsagrandoldteam · 30/07/2021 10:29

I use the Dettol laundry cleanser, a big cap full where you would normally put the softner. You don't need to wash it at 60, it works at lower temperatures.

Oh crikey, you've had your hands full!
Smokeahontas · 30/07/2021 10:31

I use the B&M / Home Bargains version of the laundry cleaner for bedding / towels / gym wear.

Kettletoaster · 30/07/2021 10:56

Napisan in the event of illness related laundry, otherwise only ever use normal washing powder and 30 or 40 degree wash

Vitallyli · 30/07/2021 11:08

Wash at 60 with Nappisan

BertieBotts · 30/07/2021 11:13

Worms are killed just by normal detergent and washing at 40.

Norovirus ideally needs 60-90 degree to kill. If someone has had a sickness bug, I tend to chuck their bedding, towels and clothing from that time period in on 60 as well as anything used to clean surfaces and anything that's actually got sick on. Seems to work well :) We don't have much delicate laundry so it doesn't cause a problem in that sense.

I do buy a "laundry disinfection rinse" (not UK brand) but this is mainly because I bought it once to replace white vinegar in the fabric softener drawer and I loved the smell so much I decided to continue using it instead of fabric softener. I'm not really convinced that it does much in the way of disinfection or that it's necessary, but it doesn't seem to cause any harm.

Jarstastic · 30/07/2021 11:14

I use ace or vanish which I think does the same as napisan (hydrogen peroxide)

Wash at 60 degrees if the wash allows.

2 capfuls of zoflora in the fabric softener compartment. I would use Dettol but the recommended dose is too expensive. I don’t buy the special laundry Dettol but Dh does (or other brand equivalents) he does the boys washing and thinks it needs itShock

BertieBotts · 30/07/2021 11:14

Also, wash your hands after filling the washing machine. Now I've got into the habit of this I can't not do it! Can't believe it never occurred to me before.

Datingandnoideahowto · 30/07/2021 11:16

I just use ace bleach or vanish same as a PP.

Wash at as hot a wash as possible with a double dose of detergent.

Nsky · 30/07/2021 11:18

Bio d, do a laundry bleach ( online or health food shops), works well like napisan .
Otherwise wash at 60
