Sudden heart palpitations

I’ve been having heart palpitations for around a week now. It feels like my heart skips a beat or does an extra beat. They’ve been fairly mild but pretty much constant and much more noticeable in the last couple of days.

I feel well in myself, I’m not anxious or stressed, I don’t smoke drink or have caffeine and I’m healthy weight. I’m 30 years old.

I’ve had heart palpitations before when I had anemia a couple of years ago so it could be that.

When would you worry? Anyone had heart palpitations and been fine?

I always tell everyone to go see a doctor when something doesn't feel right for them.

anemia, dehydration , stress, lack of sleep?

I had this a few years ago. It got worse and my arm went numb - felt like I was having a heart attack. I went to A&E each time but they could never find anything. Eventually I got referred to the heart hospital in London where they told me I had pericarditis after a bout of flu a few months prior. It went away by itself in the end.

That said OP I'd go to a local walk in centre or call 111.

I'm not a Dr and I think you should consult a Dr but my DH had similar and it turned out to be a lack of magnesium.

Roundearth · 29/07/2021 21:52

I have them a lot but I'm very sensitive to all of the above us caffeine in coffee or soft drinks
my cardiologist advised me to have drank at least 2litres of water before 12pm every day to help it ?! I never manage but even increasing it did help

WhatHaveIFound · 29/07/2021 21:52

I would see a doctor if I were you. My mum had severe anemia earlier this year and heart palpitations were one of her symptoms. Do you get out of breath too? It's worth getting checked out.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/07/2021 21:53

I wouldn't be worried, but any changes with your heart need to be investigated right way. Don't gamble with your health. Heart issues in a healthy 30 year old aren't rife, but they aren't impossible by any means, either. You need to make sure everything is OK.

For what it's worth, my heart has palpitations all the damn time, it's normal for me.

tiggy20 · 29/07/2021 22:11

Definitely get your heart checked out by a doctor. An ECG should put your mind at rest. (I say this as someone who had a heart condition diagnosed in my thirties.)
There are so many reasons why you might have palpitations but always worth taking them seriously and getting checked out.

SeaToSki · 29/07/2021 22:24

You need an ECG and while you are waiting take a magnesium supplement, eat a banana every day and make sure you are well hydrated. Are you drinking smoking or doing any drugs? If so, stop or cut right back until you can be seen.

Does it get better or worse if you exercise? If it gets worse, that is a bad sign…get to a doctor tomorrow. If it gets better with exercise, that is a better sign, get to a doctor within the week. It is most likely benign, but if it is a problem you will need to be treated asap (most likely medications)

WaterIsBest · 29/07/2021 22:27

This is not something i would leave
You need to see a doctor

Can you get a oxymeter?

Reads your heart rate and oxygen levels

But still see a dr regardless

Clocktopus · 29/07/2021 22:53

I get them but they're hormonal, I only ever get them mod-cycle in the day or two around ovulation and then the last day or two of my period. I've had ECGs, a heart scan, and a 48hr heart monitor as well as blood tests, cholesterol test, blood pressure checked and all of that. It was all normal. Mt GP eventually concluded that it's down to hormone changes linked to perimenopause.

Definitely get it checked OP, as others have said you don't mess around when it comes to stuff like your heart, but it will most likely have a totally benign cause.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 31/07/2021 19:50

I've had them and turned out to be low iron. Another time nothing on the blood and the surgery did an ECG which was normal. I think its maybe an imbalance of electrolytes in my case, pps advice of a banana - for potassium - and magnesium is good.

CapitanSandy · 12/08/2021 14:59

Thank you for the kind and helpful replies. Palpitations are still happening all day Having an ECG next week. I’ve had some blood tests but there was no action required.

Ferritin 22
Hemoglobin 137
TSH 5.0 (borderline high- needs repeating in 3 months)

Would any of these explain palpitations?

I know you’re all not medically trained. Just looking for experiences really

@CapitanSandy , I know this is an old thread but are you still getting palpiations? If not, how did you get rid of them?

I've been getting constant palpitations for days and waiting for an 24 hr holter.
