My children have reached 12 and I'm thinking of taking them into London, we live outside London but close enough to do a few trips a year in normal times. How easy and quick is it to get a child's card? Should I apply for it now? How Easy is it to use?

I took my DD to London last week. Bought a normal Oyster Card from a ticket machine, then asked one of the TFL staff to apply the Young Person discount on it. This is a temporary discount valid for 14 days. We can then keep the card and do it again next time we go, and once DD is too old for the discount she can just use it as normal. It was really easy and meant I didn’t have to do a photocard or anything in advance.

Thanks, that might be a good short term solution

I've got Oyster Zip 11-16 cards for ds 12 and dd 14. Apply online, you'll need to submit a photo and a photo of their passports. Mine was processed within the day and is currently in the post.

You'll need to create an Oyster photochromic account online. The admin fee is £15 though.

Photocard, not photochromic!
