Referred to psychiatric team

Hi all,
I'm having mental health issues right now.
I finally plucked up the courage to speak with the doctors.
I have been urgently referred to the psychiatric team.
I know I need this to get well for my dc.
I am just nervous of the process/ what to expect.
I feel like I have a nervous knot in my stomach. I feel in limbo.
Has anyone been here or does anyone know the process.
Thank you so much for reading.

Thanks

It probably differs between health trusts.

Thank you for the reply RandomMess, I never even thought of that.
I'll eed to just wait and see. It a little daunting when it's all new.

Ineedsun all he said was he thinks it would be appropriate to do an urgent referal to the psychiatric team and I should hear from the in 3 days. He wasn't any more specific than that. Just I am to expect a call from them.

Hi this happened to me when my ds was 2 I was seen by a consultant psychiatrist with in a week I believe had an hours assessment and quite quickly diagnosed with bipolar disorder I was started on mood stabilisers and anti psychotics and saw my psychiatrist maybe weekly for a while social services where never involved as that was my fear with getting help. That was nearly 5 years ago.

I will be stunned if you hear from a MH team within 3 days, and if you get an appointment in anything less than 3 months! Obviously depends on how they triage you, but the standard wait is epic 😩

This is pretty much how it went for me when I got diagnosed with Bipolar 6 years ago. No social service involvement at all.

And it was the best thing that ever happened to me and my family!

ineedsun · 29/07/2021 13:04

In our area, if they’re talking about three days it’s the single point of access team. They’re working remotely at the moment, so you would get a phone call from someone where you would talk about what’s going on for you and come up with a plan together. Ongoing support will very much depend on what happens at that meeting.
Sorry that’s probably not much help.

Hm2020 · 29/07/2021 13:16

@Stroopwaffle5000 me too. That’s why I always tell my story to people afraid of getting help.

When my family member was referred she was seen v quickly, and then in NHS counselling within a week. It can happen.

I was seen urgently 3 years ago. Was taken via ambulance to a psychiatric hospital and saw a psychiatrist the next day who still is my psychiatrist

From what I recall, the first appointment is roughly an hour long and they'll ask about your background, how your mood's been, sleep, any past traumas. Can't remember what else, but it's quite thorough. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder about 6 months later after numerous appointments with a psychiatrist and a cpn. So don't be disheartened if you don't get any answers straight away. Assessments can take a while and they want to see if there's a pattern for the best, accurate diagnosis. I was also diagnosed with ADHD last November

Best advice is just to be honest, they're there to help. Hope you feel better soon

Thank you so much everyone for your replys and sharing your stories, it really is appreciated.
Surprisingly is got a call a few hours ago from someone from the mental health team.
They gave me an emergency number just incase I need to speak to someone, she listened to my issues, took notes and is arranging an appointment for me within the next 3 weeks. How accurate that timeline is I'm not sure.
But she was lovely and reassuring and spoke of helping me to get myself well again for the dc.
I am so relieved I called now and hope this is the first step forward.
And thank you once again everyone for your responses it's appreciated.
