Can I see a doctor privately?

I have a number of health complaints al the moment and I cannot get an appointment to speak to, let alone see a doctor. The last thing I had to fill out a form for and was given a sick note with no questions asked and no follow up. This was after trying to get a call back twice before that they told me I needed to fill out the form. Is there a way of just booking a private GP and paying?

Push doctor

Yes, there are private doctors around. We have a local private hospital that offers private Gp appointments.

@MyDcAreMarvel I've had a quick look. Is it just video consultations? One of my problems is a mole I'm worried about and it might be difficult to show on video.
@Standrewsschool can you say whereabouts you are, roughly?
Thank you both for the replies!

If you're worried about a mole and wanting to get it seen privately then I wouldn't bother with a private GP, go straight to a dermatologist.

Suzi888 · 29/07/2021 04:55

I’m in Wales and you can here. I think it’s about £80 for 45 minutes. For the mole, they’ll probably need to send you to a dermatologist anyway. Speeds up the process of a consultation though, so I think it’s worth it.
No idea if it’s just video consultations, sorry.

I pay £35 a month for 6 appointments a year with a company called IGP. Very impressive so far!

FuckingBUTTERbeans · 29/07/2021 05:20

Thanks for all the replies. I can see that seeing a dermatologist for the mole would be a good way to go, but one of the other issues is depression with suicidal thoughts, which is what they told me to fill out the form for. I'd just really like to see someone, in person, for all of it. Those are the two more important things. Other more minor things are a cyst that needs draining all the time (GP aware and uninterested), painful and now noisy elbow and a bacterial infection. @LondonLife3 I'll have a look at that, thanks!

We pay about £100 for half an hour around here. We’ve only used the service twice but it’s great. The Dr genuinely has time to listen to you and doesn’t have the little 8 minute stop watch going in the corner of their pc. Definitely money well spent. Also if you need medication you pay the private prescription rate which for us meant the medication cost 89p rather than the prescription rate. It also means that if you’re willing/able to pay you have access to more expensive medication that the drs are reluctant to prescribe on the NHS.

Taciturn · 29/07/2021 07:07

GP are really a diagnostic services. I agree with other: you should contact specialists if you know where the issue is. The mole clinic (London) can take special deep photo of your mole for about £50 if I recall

FuckingBUTTERbeans · 29/07/2021 07:10

@Billybagpuss is that a video consultation? Do they do referrals? I'm thinking my mole and elbow might need a referral. Thanks for the reply.

course you can, that’s all I haven’t used the nhs in 20 years (i do have health insurance for any referrals though).

Just google private GPs near me.

I’ve seen them face to face throughout the past year.

Arsebucket · 29/07/2021 07:15

Agh made no sense - baby climbing on me.
*that’s all I use

Arsebucket · 29/07/2021 07:54

Oh and for moles, some large Boots stores do a service.

Ours was pre covid so face to face. I don’t know what the current set up is.

Billybagpuss · 29/07/2021 08:05

Yes they do referrals but only private ones, so if it is something you want done on the NHS you would then have to self refer if allowed or also see regular GP.

MakeCrisps · 29/07/2021 08:39

The NHS doesn't remove cysts routinely anymore, so you'd have to do that one privately even if you saw a doctor.

Bagelsandbrie · 29/07/2021 08:41

For the cyst and mole definitely see a dermatologist.
