If an interview says wear smart/casual clothes?

What would you wear? Assuming you were a 16 year old boy who’s applied for a job in a leisure centre. The first round is a group interview so he’s keen not to be either over or under dressed!

Dark trousers with a shirt tucked in

SophiesMummySaid · 28/07/2021 19:57

Polo neck and chinos

I would probably wear a nice shirt tucked into smart chinos. No tie or jacket. Decent shoes, not scruffy or scuffed. Something like that should straddle both decently - too smart to read as casual/sloppy, but well short of a suit.

Chinos and a shirt tucked in.

MrsFelicianoLopez · 28/07/2021 19:59

Yes, some sort of collared shirt tucked in to either chinos or smart dark jeans.

SpeakingFranglais · 28/07/2021 20:03

Yes, yes, yeas, Shirt, no tie, open necked but smart and non descript pants. Maybe a jacket and clean shoes not trainers

Both my DS wore suits to interviews at 16. One was at a leisure centre funnily enough. They were offered the job every time because they stood out for taking it seriously.

FishfingerFlinger · 28/07/2021 20:03

I’d work around what he’s already got.

I think you could get away with smart jeans, clean/smart trainers and a polo shirt.

Or you could go for smart trousers with belt, smart shoes and tucked in shirt. But I wouldn’t buy smart clothes for the sake of it.

Obviouspretzel · 28/07/2021 20:07

Chinos , shirt , shoes.

LolaSmiles · 28/07/2021 20:09

Smart jeans or chinos with a shirt, no tie, and a pair of nice, non-scuffed shoes.

SnarkyBag · 28/07/2021 20:38

Thanks will probably go with smart jeans, polo shirt and decent footwear. As the email specifies smart casual I think a suit will be overkill if it hadn’t have mentioned dress code at all I’d have said wear your suit.

Chinos and a shirt, no jeans or trainers.

I’m interviewing for staff at the moment and a good first impression counts.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 28/07/2021 21:44

Oh gawd don’t send him in a suit as was advised above!! We had someone show up at our office in a suit when it’s a very casual company - and we felt that they hadn’t bothered to read anything about the company or what the culture is like!
