Work help

Got this situation at work where my boss is leaving. He's asked if I will step up on a temporary basis as head of XX, but that they are not sure yet if they will replace at his grade or not.

It's quite a small / experienced team so a bit of a question mark if we need that level to manage the team, certainly not from a day to day/ workload / roadmap point of view but he thinks 'we may lack strategic direction without senior management'.

I feel like I manage quite a large chunk of the team independently already so feel like I could make the step up (which would mean promo but not to his grade) but there's a fair bit of internal politics that he shields us/me from at the moment and I'm unsure how I'd cope with that.

I'm not sure if I should put my neck on the line and push for the solution that would be most beneficial to me, but I'm worried in case I make a hash of it and it turns out not to be the right choice!

On the other hand I think I would feel really shit if I step up, get comfortable, enjoy it and then get pushed back to current role.

What would you do?

Push for the most beneficial solution. If it doesn't work, fine, but you're doing a lot of the work anyway and realistically it sounds like you know you're more than capable.

Pretty much this!

Thanks guys. I'm also a bit worried about perception in my team and the wider business although I think there's a fair bit of my input that he takes credit for!

Well I went for it, send boss an email with org chart of how I see things could work etc. He included it as an option when he announced to the team that he was leaving, I was really nervous what everyone would think but pretty much everyone was really supportive!

Would still need to be agreed by snr.Management but I reckon if they have an option that will cost them 80k per annum and one that doesn't.. I think they will go for the cheaper option. Fingers crossed.
