Why? It's bringing some anxiety. Baby in hand sleeping...and I'm scared of the noise even though I'm inside my own house. Weird.

I used to be when my babies where little, now we're all perched on the window ledge with cushions & blankets watching the thunder & lightening, my kids LOVE IT! They are still babies and although it does make me a little uneasy I try and make it fun for the kiddos
My lights have been flickering for the past half an hour so I'm half expecting a power cut... then It's not so fun 😅

Willowthewispp · 28/07/2021 12:20

Me!! I definitely need a thunder buddy lol
I try not to be in front of my kids. But yes since i was a child I have been.

drumandthebass · 28/07/2021 12:24

A little bit. I'm more scared of strong winds though. Flashbacks to camping and re-pegging guy ropes at 4 in the morning!

I think it’s pretty normal to have a fear reaction to very loud noises, so you’re not weird.

Thunder happens simultaneously with lightning (it’s caused by it) but you hear it a few beats later because sound travels slower than light.

What this means is that by the time you hear thunder the event that caused it is already over so can’t hurt you. Keep telling yourself that 🙂

mnahmnah · 28/07/2021 12:38

Lightning, yes, for obvious reasons. Thunder, no. I find it quite thrilling. The power of nature.

slavetothekittens · 28/07/2021 12:49

Not scared of thunder, but lightning scares me purely because of the damage it is capable of causing.

Maggiesfarm · 28/07/2021 13:11

Not me but my mother was always terrified. She wouldn't go out if a storm was threatened and when indoors, would go in the cupboard under the stairs if she heard thunder.

It doesn't bother me, it looks as though we might have a storm today actually, it is dark and raining with some wind.

igelkott2021 · 28/07/2021 21:40

I don't care about thunder, it's lightning that causes the damage.

And like a pp I am not keen on strong winds.

Too many trees around our house so I don't want them to blow on the house or get struck by lightning and fall on the house.

Kanaloa · 28/07/2021 21:56

When I was really little I remember my grandma used to make us open all the windows, to ‘let the storm go through.’ I still do it now although I don’t really know why! I love storms though, perfect excuse to get the duvets on the couch and a good film on, or if the kids are asleep get in bed early with a book.

I just imagine it to be the steps of a t rex in jurassic Park and i love it

Makinglists · 28/07/2021 22:06

My mum used to say it was God moving the furniture. I like to have an image of a man in white robes moving a sofa then saying 'ahh no preferred it back there where I could see the telly'

Thecomfortador · 28/07/2021 22:20

It made me jump while I was working today. I don't like it, particularly being in the house on my own at the time, which sounds ridiculous as a grown woman. I don't like lightning either, obviously that is the dangerous part. Never been one for watching storms at the window.

Same here! Including the image of moving the sofa...

Weirdly, only at night.

When I was a kid it used to scare me at night and I’d run across the landing and dive in the middle of my parents bed. One of these nights as I ran lightning lit up the landing and the god awful pampas grass type things mum had in a jar at the top of the stairs (it was the 70s) was illuminated.
My child brain saw this and imagined a figure and it kind of stayed with me. It’s a ridiculous thing but I genuinely am scared of the lightning showing me a figure in the corner or something. Hence night storms the light comes on.

Clawdy · 28/07/2021 22:27

My little sister was terrified of storms, so I used to tell her it was a funny family living in the sky, and the thunder was their furniture falling down the stairs! If it was a huge bang, it was a wardrobe. Lightning was "Albert fusing the lights." It seemed to help, and she says now it was one of the few nice things I did as an older sis!

BashfulClam · 28/07/2021 23:16

I love thunder and lightning. I had a friend who used to cry, squeal and shake the whole time (some of it seemed over the top tbh). My poor dog was always petrified.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 28/07/2021 23:25

Very, very frightening.

My mum told me it was God rolling potatoes down the stairs.
