Well this is off my list of places to travel no matter whether green, amber or red

I always fancied Mexico and was reading the recent reviews when this appeared.

I'm really confused.

The sisters were treated in hosp.

I don't understand what the review is saying? I'll read it again still confused.

Wow! The hotel don’t seem too concerned.

Broke my heart when that little boy was taken by an alligator in Florida a couple of years ago - I think it was a Disney resort that was accused of not having the correct signage aswell.

Just awful!!

AMCoffeePMWine · 28/07/2021 00:01

Something similar happened to a little boy, who was killed by an alligator. So devastating for his family. There were no warning signs posted at Walt Disney World, prior to this happening, if I remember correctly. An absolute tragedy.

You wouldn't go to Mexico because of this?

In loads of countries there are risks we're not used to. There were signs.

When I was on a training course overseas with a lot of people from different countries many said they wouldn't come to London because it's so dangerous. Knife crime and terrorism.

Recently in the news there's been more than one group of people killed swimming in the UK.

I think this is a massive overreaction op and I don't understand TBH.

Go to a different area of Mexico, crocs are not in every hotel! We went to various places in the Yucatan peninsula and Chiapas (so otherwise of the country to Puerto Vallarta) and didn’t see a reptile bigger than a gecko. Did see a baby crocodile in Costa Rica but it was just minding its own business as were we! It’s a fab part of the world and you’d be missing out to write it off for something so unlikely.

PattyPan · 28/07/2021 01:07

*other SIDE of the country, not otherwise

The twins attack is a completely different story that took place in a different state. They were on an excursion, not in a hotel.

The first review is saying that the reviewer witnessed a young girl being attacked by a crocodile on the hotel’s private beach. The second review says that a fellow guest saw the same girl on her flight home and heard her say she had been attacked at the Marriott- which shocked that guest as he had been staying there at the same time and had not been warned about croc attacks or told one had happened during his stay.

I take my lead from the Australians.

Spiders? Meh. Snakes? Whatever. Sharks? Misunderstood sweeties. Jellyfish? Just wear a suit. Cassowaries? You're in their territory.

But salties? Watch grown Australian men and women look properly worried. And they warn you. These are people who surf with sharks in the water. But they don't mess with crocs.

NiceGerbil · 28/07/2021 02:10

Yes- when o clicked first time it took me to s different review- no idea why.

And it was all about towels.

And I was ???!!! Second time I got the right one! Thanks.

I still stand by my post. There are all sorts of risks around the place. Some have ones we aren't used to. There were signs.

The bit about no ambulance is strange. Not least because by the sound of it there was the injured girl and the group who rescued her. They all said ok fine? Didn't insist? Ask for a number themselves? Hotel doctor to be called out/etc?

Just this girl with a chewed leg and however many others and they didn't make a fuss? Other people would prob have been about, you'd have got a crowd of nosey people surely?

It sounds embellished to me.

I also stand by the point that it seems extreme to never go to that part of the world because of it. That hotel maybe but...?

We've had in the news more than one incident of drowning while on hols.

Genuinely I don't get it. I can see that's just me though!

Grinch48 · 28/07/2021 19:18

You get loads in Cancun
I went for a meal at a thai restaurant and they would feed the scraps to the crocs - they would arrive every evening for feeding time 😂
If you were brave you could feed them 😂
and right opposite coco bongos nightclub in cancun there is a disused boat slip where you will often see several potential lively handbags - I mean crocodiles sunbathing during the daytime 😂 lots of signs on the lagoon side warning you of them and not to walk down to the lagoons edge

DefinitelyNotAHastyNameChange · 28/07/2021 22:31

unihorn the sign there is pretty obvious. They’re claiming that they didn’t see it as it’s not lit up at night. If it’s dark enough to not be able to read a whopping great sign and red flags it’s probably best not to go swimming in water you are unfamiliar with (that applies at any time, really).

It was obviously a terrifying experience for the girl but it doesn’t look like the hotel did anything wrong. Boycotting an entire country due to a couple of trip advisor reviews probably written by the family trying to get compensation is bonkers.

Unihorn · 29/07/2021 19:27

Yes I agree boycotting a country is ridiculous, but I don't think that review is embellished. I would probably expect reminders to be sent out to guests in the following days about the dangers of crocodiles if an attack had taken place. I wasn't even aware crocodiles were a risk in Mexico, though we holidayed a lot further south than Cancun.
