If you’re child has ADHD, how much help and support do they get at high school?
Also what sort of things do they get help with?
Thanks

I’m a teacher and the students at my school have the following sorts of assistance, although some of them have additional SEN and neurodiversity such as ASD:
Some have TA support if they are funded students and have EHCPs.
Most have mentors.
Time-out cards.
Movement-breaks.
Toilet passes - some students have comorbid bowel conditions or side-effects from the meds.
Quite a lot of ADHD students have Exam Access Arrangements so readers, scribes, quiet rooms, movement breaks etc for exams and assessments.
All staff are advised about appropriate teaching strategies, such as chunked instructions, writing frames and written instructions etc.
We have a sensory room and a quiet zone.
Students can access the Support Dept at breaks and lunchtimes. Many attend HW Club after school.

There is a lot more awareness of neurodiversity than there used to be. For example, most of my colleagues wouldn’t keep an ADHD child in a break detention for the whole of break time, as we are aware of the importance of being able to eat, have a movement break and be outside. One good aspect of the Covid situation in schools is that most secondaries are using platforms such as Google Classroom to upload lessons and HW every day. This means it’s much easier for parents and form tutors to be across HW deadlines and tasks and support students. It also helps with losing worksheets, not writing down HW properly etc which can be a problem for students with ADHD.

Finally, my daughter’s school are very farsighted and buy in the services of a specialist teacher/ consultant to work with ASD and ADHD students, focusing on social and communication skills.

What help do you think he needs? Does he have an EHCP in place.

Not even got a formal diagnosis yet, just my suspicions.
