Why so little coverage of the women’s gymnastics team getting bronze

Just been watching the Olympics coverage of the women’s team gymnastics. I only saw one quick vault of a Brit, none of the routines. Everything was about the USA, the Russians and the Italians. Then I find out that Britain get bronze!!! What. Still hardly anything said. WTF?!?! This is a big thing. Still not in the headlines. More coverage of an American competitor dropping out. What is going on?

I do think she should have carried on in th team competition. Fair enough pull out of the individual if you have to
Why do you think this?

@Bryonyshcmyony

Couldn't she just have done easier movements? I'm sure thst would have been suggested

Oh well it's done now. I don't imagine she'll return.

Then she would have got a lower score. Better to withdraw and give another gymnast an opportunity to take part in an Olympic final. It’s not like she withdrew and there was no one to sub in!

Why do you think this?

Because you don't let a team down unless you have to, clealry she felt she had no choice

This is the statement from USA Gymnastics:

“After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition. We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many.”

Why should she risk her physical and mental health? She absolutely did the right thing.

BeQuietBrenda · 28/07/2021 12:00

It's OK OP, I've never heard of her either. I don't follow gymnastics and have very little interest in the Olympics generally, other than rowing and that's because I'm an ex rower and one of our clubs protégés is competing.

No idea why I even clicked the thread tbh... Well I'm unwell and bored. Interesting to learn about the coverage though, IOC sound like a right bunch of bastards.

Well, I guess plenty of sports people risk their physical health - the eventers going cross country could die if their horse had a rotational fall. But she's clearly done the right thing for her mtnal health although I am surprised team USA didn't have thst covered

Obviously she felt she had no choice. You don’t pull out of an Olympic finals for the fun of it. But you said you thought she should’ve have continued. Which is nonsense. Nothing is worth continuing for, if it puts you at risk.

I was frustrated too at not seeing more of the British gymnastics team. One of the team, Amelie Morgan was on the CBBC show Gym Stars that my DD's used to watch all the time when they were younger.

But they won a silver and ROC were in excellent form. I don't think her competing would have made any difference to the result at all - if anything, they might have scored lower as well as being dangerous. Clearly her team mates are incredibly supportive of her too.

If only the English football team had been as brave as Simone and withdrawn from the final against Italy when it looked like it was going to penalties. They should have prioritised their mental health.

Ouch!

@Bryonyshcmyony using your analogy it's not just riding a horse that could fall, Simone has competed plenty of times and took the risk that things may go wrong. It would be more like riding a horse that had been hugely spooked and was likely to bolt or something. She was lost in the air, called the 'twisties', and to correct that can take time, it's a mental disconnect between mind and body, for her to then throw more skills and have it happen again would be downright dangerous, she was lucky she landed on her feet after that vault, she might not be as lucky if she continued.

I expect every single gymnast out there has fear about screwing up and falling.

It didn't look like a carefully thought out decision. It looked like panic. It WAS panic. I really feel for her but trying to reframe it as a carefully thought out conscious decision is a bit much.

Imagine how stupid you would have to be to post something like this and think you are making some sort of point 😂😂😂😂

I can’t believe that somebody hasn’t heard of Simone Biles!?

I've not heard of her. Stands in solidarity with OP Smile

Brown76 · 28/07/2021 12:29

I was hugely disappointed. Does anyone know if the medal ceremony is available to view anywhere?

On Simone Biles…she’s risking her life doing those vaults if she’s off form. I’m sure she’s showed up and trained hard year round and pushed herself hard through physical pain and mental challenges her whole life…but one cannot be on form every day, every competition. On this occasion, she just couldn’t make it happen and that’s okay. I’m glad she’s not injured.

DaisyDreaming · 28/07/2021 12:39

I was hoping for her to return for the individual just so she finishes her Olympic career on a high

Palavah · 28/07/2021 21:42

You can find the GB team's performances on bbc iplayer now, in the Olympics section
