Go Ape tomorrow, tell me I'll be okay

Just that really. Off to Go Ape tomorrow. Tell me I'm not going to fall off, my harness is not going to break, I'm not going to clip it on to something wrong and fall off? Surely it's idiot proof and there's some sort or backup if I get it wrong? Or if the kids get it wrong, that's even worse.
It'd the Keswick one, the highest in Britain? Just to make it worse.
I'm going on to 'supervise' my kids, tell me there are actual staff up there too and not just me? I'm going to be no use whatsoever if they get stuck.
Panic panic panic. I'm never going to sleep tonight, I'm such a wimp.

I found supervising my 11 year old ds who sprinted through the treetop obstacles with ease meant that I just had to get on with it and keep up! The clipping on is easy. It will be fun!

terrywynne · 26/07/2021 23:27

You doing a practice area first with staff supervising. There are two clips and you always unclip them one at a time as you move around so you should never end up in a position where you are unclipped.

Ismellyou · 26/07/2021 23:28

You are secured by 2 fastenings throughout when I last went. So, when it comes to attaching yourself to the next line, you are still attached to the previous one until you Unclip it.

It's very safe.

There's no staff up with you but they are around if you need help

I did it with two 11 year olds and another time with my ex. Was great fun.

Wear gloves (can buy them there fir a couple of pounds), tie hair back, sturdy shoes

ODFOx · 26/07/2021 23:29

It will be fine. The courses are not like fairground rides and you will be completely fin.e. Enjoy!

IdblowJonSnow · 26/07/2021 23:32

If you find it nerve wracking, you can lift your feet up on some sections and slowly 'zip' across.

Hope you enjoy it!

Teaandakitkat · 27/07/2021 10:04

We're heading off in 10 minutes. So nervous, it's ridiculous. 10 yr olds do it and don't fall off, a 45 yr old woman is not going to fall off. Just changing my outfit for the 100th time.

Thanks for the tips

Good luck! You're braver than me because I refuse to do it because I'm sure I'd do something wrong!

OhToBeASeahorse · 27/07/2021 10:17

Good luck!! I was terrified but did it and was so proud of myself!

GetTheStartyParted · 27/07/2021 10:31

I have a fear of insecure heights, so ladders and things terrify me. We went to Go Ape and I managed to do it and even enjoyed most of it.

It's pretty idiot proof - have a great day!

StarryNight468 · 27/07/2021 10:39

I was terrified when I did it, but so proud of myself after!!

BogRollBOGOF · 27/07/2021 10:58

My mantra is "trust the harness, trust the harness"

I once did a high ropes on a Scouting site, it was great until I reached a tight rope with vines and couldn't reach the next one! I wejt through "forever" of squealing and wailing in terror before actually falling off, having a short drop and realising I was now down by the tight rope and pulled my self to thr end in 3 seconds laughing Grin
My friend behind is not good with heights, she just got down into the harness and pulled herself along too Grin

Teaandakitkat · 27/07/2021 13:37

Oh my that was so stressful. Cried on the first zipline, my son actually pushed me off or I wouldn't have gone. On the verge of a full blown panic attack when I had to wait on one of the wobbly platforms while they rescued someone in front of us who just refused to go any further, nearly needed rescuing myself at that point.
But I did it! And I got a sticker to prove it!
Never again. I need a lie down now

Well done op!

rainbowstardrops · 27/07/2021 14:03

Well done!!!!
Like I said earlier, you're braver than me! Seems like my idea of hell! Grin

Wooollffff · 27/07/2021 14:09

I would hate it, you’re very brave! My Mum was in her 70s when she did the Whinlatter one with DD1, I refused!

simonisnotme · 27/07/2021 15:04

well done OP your a dam sight braver than me - i cant stand heights

igelkott2021 · 28/07/2021 09:29

Well done OP, you are braver than I am. I think I would have struggled anyway as I am scared of heights, but I could have rationalised it and said there are harnesses etc and I can't fall off.

But since the accident in Bracknell, I know that you can fall off. So my fear isn't so irrational after all.

hels71 · 28/07/2021 09:33

DD and I are doing the Dalby Forest one next week. I am terrified. Why gloves?

fruitpastille · 28/07/2021 09:39

Your hands can get a bit sore holding on to the ropes. That's probably why. You might be better without rings too. I found it quite physically demanding on my arms/hands as I felt I had to keep holding on but DS just sailed along letting his harness take the strain!

hels71 · 28/07/2021 09:53

That makes sense!

Teaandakitkat · 28/07/2021 11:21

I didn't know about that accident, just as well I didn't. That is awful. But I guess nothing in life is completely risk free. I hope that person was okay.

I didn't feel at any time like I would fall off. I felt well tied on all the time, we had 2 safety lines so both of them would have to have gone wrong at the same time for anyone to fall off. I had a total panic on the first zip line, I've never ever done anything like that before. But once I'd done it and realised I was safe I felt okay.

The worst part was standing waiting on the platforms between the obstacles. When I was doing the obstacles I didn't have time to worry. But when I was just standing there waiting vertigo threatened to take over. I didn't know where to look. I couldn't look up, that made me feel dizzy, I couldn't look down, I couldn't close my eyes. I couldn't lean against anything because everything sways ever so slightly. But even as everything was slightly swimming round about me I knew I wouldn't fall off, I just had to keep calm until I got to the end. So I survived (obviously) but it was not fun.
The kids were just laughing at me, I guess if you don't have any fear of anything you can't imagine what it's like.

As for gloves, most people didn't wear them, I didn't. My hands were a bit sore hanging on to all the ropes but I managed fine without them. Ds has eczema on his hands and he wore gloves, he was glad he had worn them.

Very brave! My idea of hell!

Thelikelylass · 28/07/2021 14:14

Oh Christ I did this on that commando swing, my Bridget Jones moment holding a load of people up in the treetops (that's very, very high by the way) and felt utterly stupid. I did complete it but my arms were deep purple te next day where I'd cling for dear life to the trees and wires. Glad I did it though! Good luck mate!

Thelikelylass · 28/07/2021 14:15

Oh you've done it! Yep, that's finished and never to be repeated! Congrats!

hels71 · 04/08/2021 20:48

I survived today! The worst bits were the cargo nets and rope ladders, the best bits the zip wires. I was glad I had my gloves! My DD 13 who normally freaks over anything totally loved it!
