My Grandad used to pass the time walking but has become ill, what would you recommend to keep his head busy?

Crosswords / word searches / painting. Would he listen to audio books? Can he use an ipad? What are his interests?

U3A check the local one - ours does a whole range of different things & he will meet people
Local History groups
& the library see what's on there or whether they advertise local groups hobbies

  • Bird feeder and binoculars
  • Butterfly ID chart
  • Barrel pond for the garden
  • A quick growing plant
  • A pet? Goldfish, cat? Having something to look after can give people a increased sense of responsibility and purpose in life

Would he like to learn a language? After my DF had a stroke he learnt French he has passed his GCSE and is now studying for his A level.

Also, have you checked for groups in his area? My MIL volunteers weekly at a place that collect people from their homes and provide a meal. I think its £5 for a 3 course meal.

Is he part of a church? They often have activities and groups.

What are his interests?

Coin collecting? We are not in the UK but we get rolls of coins from the bank ‘noodle’ them to find one of each year and commemorative coins and deposit the rest back in. Lots of groups on SM for this too.

Family tree?

Online/real life chess, scrabble, photography, art classes or painting outside, writing, fishing, star gazing, going for drives/picnics (even just as a passenger), get into cooking, gardening, model building, learn an instrument or take up attempting to break various World Records?

Minecraft on a console. My elderly Aunt is addicted Grin

FelicityBeedle · 26/07/2021 23:24

Depending on what sort of guy he is, knitting? There are often appeals for baby blankets for hospitals and it’s easy to pick up

FelicityBeedle · 26/07/2021 23:24

@WaverleyPirate
I’m imagining a very bald and tiny bonsai trees after a week Grin

My mum just did her grade 1 piano! She’s loving learning and her teacher is happy to teach her over com too so bonus points for social distancing!

Bridge club, though bridge can be addictive.
