Baby’s eye colour

DC2 is a few months old and his eyes have changed from newborn blue to a dark brown. DH has very blue eyes, my eyes are mostly grey but can sometimes look green or blue. DC1 has eyes like mine. I didn’t think it was very common for 2 blue eyed people to have a brown eyed baby so I just wanted to see how many other people have experienced this.

It's not very common, it's almost unheard of and some studies results have lead to claims that it is impossible. I read a study though that found 1 blue eyed couple with a brown eyed baby amongst their subjects. So it could actually be worth writing to a university that studies genetics, it could be really interesting.

That would be interesting! I’m not sure if because I don’t have true blue eyes it makes it more common but I’ll look into it

It’s unusual but not impossible - friend has very dark eyed child and both parents have bright blue eyes- but you can clearly see it is definitely the dad’s child. Genetics taught at GCSE downplays the complexity of eye colour inheritance to the point that according to the syllabus that situation should be impossible. I make sure to stress that this is an over simplification in case children start to worry!

It is possible, how it happens is quite complicated. Blue eyes are a lack of pigment at the front. I’ve met people with one blue eye and one brown eye and identical twins with different coloured eyes.

Haha😂 I remember a few panicked peers in my GCSE science class when we studied this!.

Eye colour genetics are super complicated. If your eyes are not obviously blue then they don't have the same lack of pigment which makes having a none-blue eyed child unlikely.

You can't carry a brown gene and show blue so I'd think you're eyes aren't gray but more brown? Let's see em?

ladygindiva · 26/07/2021 22:04

My parents both have greyish blue eyes and my brother and I have brown eyes. Our maternal grandma had dark brown eyes, I'm guessing that's how. I have the opposite, my partner has green, I have brown, one if our dts has blue. ( other twin is a predictable brown) all very weird.

Twizbe · 26/07/2021 22:05

Eye colour is weird. My husband has brown eyes and I have blue. I'd always thought brown was dominant so any kids would have brown eyes. Nope - both have blue like me 🤷🏼‍♀️

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 26/07/2021 22:07

This is an interesting thread! I have a 5-month-old with blue eyes, while both me and his dad have Hazel eyes and his brother has brown eyes. I was wondering how it happened!

3womeninaboat · 26/07/2021 22:08

I read somewhere that really grey eyes are actually malfunctioning brown eyes. Made sense to me as I have grey (look blue and green from clothing but really are grey) and thought that adding grey to green wouldn’t end up with brown, but it did.

My DM has green eyes, Maternal grandparents have brown eyes too. Similar to you, that’s why I think DC2 may have brown eyes

I have browny green eyes, DH has dark green. Two of our three DC have blue eyes. Eye colour genes are weird and wonderful things.

BabyRace · 26/07/2021 22:13

That's interesting, my dd's eyes were never blue. Came out so dark they were almost black, never seen that before!

Sorrycantreadtest · 26/07/2021 22:17

My mum = dark brown
My dad = blue/grey
Maternal GPS = 1 blue, 1 brown
Paternal gps not sure (died when my dad was a child)
Me and sibling = green/brown
DH = blue
Dcs = 1 blue like dh and one with same weird colour as me.
Eyes are a real enigma and I would guess have been the cause of many maeital problems over the years!

Ooh, us too, and both parents white Northern European with hazel eyes.
Chocolatebuttercream · 26/07/2021 22:19

@BabyRace same with me, my brother, and all 3 of my kids.

Thecomfortador · 26/07/2021 22:21

Interesting that grey eyes might be malfunctioning brown. I have brown and DP blue eyes. Ds1 has dark grey eyes. I wondered if he had one brown gene from me and the rest all blue so it wasn't quite enough to go brown. They definitely don't match mine or DPs.

NotanothernamechangeforMN · 26/07/2021 22:24

My DH has brown eyes and his parents both have blue. I didn't think it was unusual until this thread haha.

His Maternal grandad has brown eyes.

I’ve just tried to get a picture of my eyes but it isn’t working very well😂. So interesting to hear about everyone’s eye colour though

My BIL has brown eyes. MIL and FIL both have bright blue eyes. In this case DH and I both think MIL is telling porkies! Grin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/07/2021 23:08

DH and I have grey eyes and ds has conker brown ones. My mum,dad and sister all have brown eyes and I have grey.

championofdance · 27/07/2021 01:00

Thankfully DC2 was conceived in lockdown when DH and I were together 24/7, so he can be sure he’s the dad😂
