Ideas for a staycation…literally at HOME

DH and I have decided that we don’t want to travel anywhere this year, even within the UK. Prices are sky-high and we have just moved into a house that we would like to spend money on.
However, we would like to create that ‘holiday feeling’ at home for a full week on a budget of about £500. So basically, having fun, not worrying about normal responsibilities and eating fairly badly Smile

We have the following ideas:

Ask our regular cleaner to come and do 1 hour every day, more as a maid service than a cleaner (she is wonderful and has agreed to this already and is glad of the extra cash!)

Evening meal out / takeaway each night

Breakfasts of pastries, fruit, fresh juices and Prosecco

Lunch either at cafes or crusty bread/ cheese/ hams with watermelon and ice cream

Swimming every day. Booked into 4 different pools, so each only visited max twice.

Wearing sun cream. Every day even if it’s miserable. Just so we smell of holiday.

Kids staying up late. DH and I drinking wine from early evening.

Once kids in bed, DH and I to sit out and play cards / travel board games then watch films.

‘Day trips’ to zoo and museums and 2 mornings at the beach.

Can anybody suggest any other things we could do to recreate a holiday experience?

Stick the tent up in the garden and stay in it whatever the weather!
Animals at kennels.
Speak loud/bad Spanish at (not to) people.

They have to be Lays Crisps though! I'm sure you can order online!

Stop the car on your way back from a day trip but don’t get out and sit there pretending you’re stuck in a five mile traffic jam.

Lol, x post!

Go for a drive in rush hour?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/07/2021 19:32

Hire a hot tub?

Bookaholic73 · 26/07/2021 19:33

I keep on planning the same thing, from my own home.

One thing I’ll do is to treat my town like I’m a tourist. So go to the local TIC and find out the history, walk the historic routes etc.

Get up early to put towels on your garden furniture

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/07/2021 19:35

Lock away all your decent knives.

Pool in back garden

We stayed at home last summer (one week staycation) but drove to nice places within a couple of hours driving for the day.

In a way it felt better than being away as every night we came back to a nice comfy place with all what we needed and liked on hand. During the days we covered areas from the Lake District to Northumbria and down to the Peak District, the money we saved in hotels was all spent in lovely cafes and trendy restaurants 🙂

It was more indulgent than going away and we had a much better time. I also enjoyed not having the days dictated by the check in/out times of the hotels.

Have any of your local pubs got live music back? Cheesier the better

lannistunut · 26/07/2021 19:40

All you need is Orangina and it will feel like you're on the continent.

CuckooCuckooClock · 26/07/2021 19:40

Forrin language radio station playing in the garden

Sally2791 · 26/07/2021 19:41

Hot tub hire sounds good! Maybe get some beauty treatments

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/07/2021 19:41

Soft drinks in glass bottles with a straw

lannistunut · 26/07/2021 19:41

Oh and also go to a market to buy your lunch for the day. I am going to do that when I have a week off this holiday - no boring menu planning, just wafting about choosing tomatoes.

Mangozesty · 26/07/2021 19:41

Buy a new book to enjoy!

CuckooCuckooClock · 26/07/2021 19:42

Get a bag of kids play sand and sprinkle it all over the bathroom every day. And rub some in your hair.

GrandmasCat · 26/07/2021 19:44

Now, when it comes to the kids… they will be much happier with not too much activity on the days. One single activity a day and a quiet evening it is more manageable for them and far less stressful for you.

Copperblack · 26/07/2021 19:46

Go and visit the viewing platform of your local airport in the first day and watch planes take off

Buy lots of comics and magazines, don’t watch Tv

We do breakfast out every day at different cafes

Wear swimming costumes all day

Make an ice cream bar - lots of flavours, different cones, toppings etc

Send postcards to family and friends
