How much difference does on stone make to your body?

I’ve put on 12lbs over the pandemic and I’m actually shocked about the difference it has made in my body. My clothes from last year look tiny and I can’t even see how they would fit if I did lose that weight again. My BMI now is 24.9 so (just) technically I’m fine, but I ugh, I can really feel it. I’m so aware of my body and the extra weight. Does anyone else find one stone (or even a bit less in this case) really makes a huge difference?

Going the other way - I've lost 2 stone recently, my BMI is under 24 now and while I can see a difference, I haven't really dropped a dress size, my old clothes still fit me, and my stomach is huge. I am under 9 stone now and just can't understand why I don't look slimmer! It's depressing. I'm verging on trying to lose another stone to see if that makes a difference. I honestly thought that 2 stone off would make me feel great!

MildredPuppy · 26/07/2021 09:55

I think it depends on your start point. Yes for me a stone made a huge difference but it was a big % of my start weight and my start weight was in the middle of the 'normal weight range' so it took me to the top

Scarby9 · 26/07/2021 09:56

Huge!
It shows both on my torso and face.

cathyandclare · 26/07/2021 09:59

At 5 '3 a stone either way can take me from looking chunky and overweight to looking v slim ( although not skinny, I've never been there so no idea how low I'd have to go to look skinny)

Goatinthegarden · 26/07/2021 10:02

Yeh, I normally exercise hard every day and eat quite heartily but healthily.

Over the last two weeks of hot weather, I have been ‘on holiday’, eaten out every day, had more alcohol than usual and just lounged around in the sun. I’ve very quickly put on 8lbs over that time and it’s so obvious. Straight on to my thighs and stomach and my clothes are tight.

Back to the normal routines today. Hopefully it won’t take too long to get back into shape.

Oddbutnotodd · 26/07/2021 10:07

I’ve lost 8kg since the beginning of the year so a bit more. I was verging into size 16 and am now 12/14. I can see it on my body more than my face. I feel much better and my old clothes fit me again. I’m 5ft 6 tall. My BMI is now about 26 but I’ve always been heavy for my size. I may lose another 3-4kg but I’m fairly relaxed about it.

HippeePrincess · 26/07/2021 10:12

I’m 5ft8 so 12-14lb change often doesn’t result in a change in dress size, I’d lost 1.5stone before I was comfortable in the next size down.

MrsCremuel · 26/07/2021 10:12

Depends how much I weigh at the time. I am 5’9 and if I I from 13 to 12 stone I am still a size 14. If I went from 12 to 11 I’d be in a roomy 12. I’ve been having babies the last few years so my weight has been a bit up and down!

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 26/07/2021 10:15

Seems to really depend on my weight. I lost 2 stone and no one noticed. I lost a further stone and every noticed.

MySecretHistory · 26/07/2021 10:19

None at all
List a stone- 3 stone above medium bmi originally/overweight but not obsess

Can’t see it and no difference to clothes

Naaaaah · 26/07/2021 10:20

I've put about 10 lbs on in a year and I feel lumpy and stodgy. I too look at my clothes and think, how the hell did I fit in them! Am trying to lose the weight but my motivation is seriously lacking.

FreeBritnee · 26/07/2021 10:21

It’s crazy isn’t it. 10 pounds on and I no longer fit lots of my clothes.

Ohpulltheotherone · 26/07/2021 10:24

A stone makes a fair bit of difference to my shape and how my clothes fit.

I’ve put a good stone & half on this year and lots of my clothes don’t fit or are super tight and unflattering/ uncomfortable.

Losing a stone from where I am now would put me firmly back in the comfy and slim(ish) zone.

RubyGoat · 26/07/2021 10:27

I’m 5’3” & lost a stone in spring. Went from BMI 30 to BMI 27 ish, & definite improvement in how I feel. Need to lose about another 2 stone to get to a weight I’m actually happy at though. Weight has been at a plateau for ages but it’s finally started to go down again this week, hurrah!

Kinsters · 26/07/2021 10:28

It makes a difference to me but not a massive difference. Mostly ends up on my bum, thighs, upper arms and face and given that I prefer looser clothes that kind of skim my body anyway I don't think it'd be that noticable - I wouldn't fit into my skin jeans though.

TrixieThunder · 26/07/2021 10:30

I agree that depending on how much weight you need to lose the difference changes. I used to be 13st in my early 20s and dropping down to 12 made very little difference - maybe clothes being a bit roomier but I didn’t see it. It was the stones afterwards that really dropped dress sizes.

GiveMeAUserName123 · 26/07/2021 10:32

A stone would take me up 2-3 dress sizes as I’m petite, it’s horrible being small!

GiveMeAUserName123 · 26/07/2021 10:33

And it doesn’t work back the other way either! As the last stone is so hard to loose compared to the other stones!!

Wjevtvha · 26/07/2021 10:34

I’m normally 8 stone so going up to 9 stone makes a masked difference to me; even half a stone either more or less is the difference between looking under weight or my clothes not fitting

SaintVal · 26/07/2021 10:43

Makes a huge difference to me. I'm 5ft 3 and just over ten stone. A whole stone lighter on me is very noticeable and a whole dress size down, if not two. Trying to lose these extra pounds is proving impossible!!

ALongHardWinter · 26/07/2021 10:45

As a pp said,I think it depends on the starting point. At my heaviest 3 years ago,I was 20 stone 10lbs. When I'd lost a stone,I didn't really feel any different, and certainly didn't look any different. It took another 3 stone off before I really started to notice it. But if your starting point is only one stone in total to lose, then yes,I think it does make a difference.

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/07/2021 10:48

If you've lost over a stone, but aren't really seeing a difference, try weight training. It can really change your body shape by tightening up areas you don't like. I've weighed less than I do now, but fit in the same clothes as I did back then because I've built muscle.

Marguerite2000 · 26/07/2021 11:03

It makes me look and feel fat. I'm 5'3" so it's quite a big difference, especially seeing as I was already on the top end of a healthy bmi.

grafittiartist · 26/07/2021 11:04

No difference to me. But I feel better
