Gift for a 5 year olds girls party (reception)

My DS is going to party of a school friend, but no idea what she likes. Any suggestions if fail safe gifts for girls or neutral item ? Nothing too expensive ideally.

Just please, please, please no LOL doll shite. Pornified dolls for children wrapped in fifteen tonnes of throwaway plastic. Gross.

My DDs would both have loved the hotwheels!

I was very grateful for all the craft kits we'd been given but not got around to using when lockdown hit last year. Don't discount them!

The works or home bargains / b&m have lots of stuff that would work.

Got these pens for the last party we went to www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B019DM43NA?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

They all string together so they're awesome for travelling but also good for having round the house, never find a lone pen without a lid.

If she was a bit older, I'd suggest a magic set. I got one when small and loved it for years! It was called Hocus Pocus - nothing to do with the film 😆
Llamas and owls are still around, my 6 year old loves unicorns, mermaids, Barbies, princesses (esp. Disney 🙄), Sylvanian families, Playmobil, dolls (not LOL, thank god!) and Lego.

Playmobil or Lego is good as can be added to other stuff and used in a different way. There are lots of small sets, some girly ones if you want to go that way.

The present that has gone down the best for us has been pyjamas. From h&m so cheap. Never seen outside the home so doesn’t matter if not to taste of parent, and grown out of before too long too. And unlikely to be duplicated.

We have so much craft stuff I can’t move for it. And am so sick of doing it and the mess after the past year.

There are a trilogy of books that are great for that age. I want my hat back (the best) This is not my hat and We found a hat. Any of those are a great gift. They are beautifully illustrated and really funny.

This game has good reviews. Also lego is a fail safe option as people have said. They’ve had some decent offers on amazon prime for the Lego friends over the last few days

@Di11y those pens are a brilliant idea.

Bunnycat101 · 02/08/2021 21:10

I’ve never seen a rainbicorn but it is the sort of tat my 5yo would adore! Scruff-a-luvs are a popular choice in that sort of theme too. Craft stuff also goes down well although I’ve found the jewellery ones a bit too tricky for mine at her age. The Disney princess dolls have been popular and anything unicorn/narwhal still.

Interesting a few posters have said Playmobil, I looked at it in the toy shop at the weekend and I thought it looked quite young. I know there are different sets, I suppose it's the figures are quite basic.

I can't bring myself to buy those egg things like LOL or rainbicorn. I don't mind the rainbicorn Itself, it's the plastic, but they do look very preschool. I think I'm thinking 5 year olds are more grown up than they are even though I have a boy version, I swear he's a teenager with his computer games and hotwheels.

I just can't remember being 5, I remember being 7/8 and the things I liked then, but this was the eighties 😀

Well, they do still make Mr Frosty!! 😆

Soubriquet · 03/08/2021 03:01

My dd is 8 and she chose a rainbocorn the other day with her pocket money so they are still popular but I get what you mean about the plastic

I don’t really have much to suggest that doesn’t have the plastic anymore

I mean, dd chose:-

An LOL
A barbie colour reveal little sister
Fun locket diary
Rainbocorn
Scratch and colour colouring book

What about baby baby born surprise?

baby born

Or the colour reveal barbie

barbie

Soubriquet · 03/08/2021 03:02

Or even a box of Lego

Sainsbury’s have a massive box selling for £18 and a smaller one selling for £10

NiceGerbil · 03/08/2021 03:04

If no clue what she likes then text back the mum/ dad whichever invited and say thanks for invite X is really excited. What sort of thing would y like for a present?

That what I did easy.

NiceGerbil · 03/08/2021 03:05

If you go with s guess give parents the receipt.

NiceGerbil · 03/08/2021 03:05

Easier to ask though imo.

BikeRunSki · 03/08/2021 03:10

Lego, but not Lego Friends. DD(9) hates it!

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 03/08/2021 03:11

Crayola do huge art sets for £10.

SirSamuelVimes · 03/08/2021 08:19

@NiceGerbil

If you go with s guess give parents the receipt.
Really? I've never been given the receipt with a gift for DD from her classmates' birthday gifts. It's a gift, it's received gratefully and if it's not her thing (or a LOL doll abomination) it just gets quietly shuffled off to the charity shop (or bin, LOL shite) after a while.

A few parents will message asking for ideas but I actually prefer it when it's a proper surprise, as then she gets a wider range of stuff.

I wouldn't ever think to try to exchange a gift - probably because party gifts tend to be in the £5-10 range and it's just not worth the hassle.

NiceGerbil · 03/08/2021 17:29

5yo girls don't tend to get s range of presents though it's always loads of the same sort of stuff and if the kid isn't into that it'd be a bit rubbish.

Horses for courses I always asked.
