Are your children good at the same subjects you were good at when you were in school?

I was good at English and languages and I have two teenage dc, one good at English/literacy/spelling and the other is much better at Maths. I didn’t do particularly well at science but one dc is good at science, Technology and IT. None of us is very sporty!

Are your children following in your footsteps?

No

MaMelon · 25/07/2021 20:08

DC1 is following in DH’s footsteps - both really good at maths and physics.
DD is very good at English, as I was.
DS2 is not particularly academic (for that read lazy AF) but taking after DH in that he has a natural sporting ability.

MadMadMadamMim · 25/07/2021 20:10

Half and half.

My DDs were good at History, English and Art like I was. My DSs are - amazingly - good at Maths and the Sciences.

I was excellent at languages (I speak four) and none of them are interested. I was really sporty - competed at National level in one - and they are all quite keen on sport, but only at 'playing for the school' level.

Mine ate relatively young. (8&10). But the indication is another generation that is good with maths. The majority of adults in the family have maths based jobs. (Exception being MIL who was told that girls don't do maths so never learnt properly was she was young. However she worked in administration which involved accounts etc...)

Kazzyhoward · 25/07/2021 20:18

DS ended up taking exactly the same A Levels as DH, i.e. Maths, Physics and Economics. The only difference being that DS did a hell of a lot better. i.e. straight A*s in all three, whereas DH got straight D's. Some of that will be grade inflation, but DS got a much steadier education, wasn't bullied, had study space at home etc.

Despite DS spending a lot of time with me over the years, doing art, cooking, playing musical instruments, etc., he just doesn't "get" any of that - he'd "play" along with me, but he was, frankly, useless at all the "arty" and practical stuff. He had more time spent with me than DH, but he picked up DH's traits and abilities rather than mine!

Coatandhat · 25/07/2021 20:20

Yes, definitely. Haha @MadMadMadamMim I have a degree in languages and DD studied languages at University and DS is currently doing so. Unlike me though, he is also good at Maths Wink

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/07/2021 20:22

Gosh no.
Dd is a total Science geek, I was more into English and pissing about
She's currently studying Bioscience at college and is applying to Uni this year for the same.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 25/07/2021 20:24

DD follows me in arts/humanities/English
Both DS’s follow DH in STEM.
None are sporty but all musical like me

scaredanddevastated · 25/07/2021 20:26

No. I was good at English and languages. My daughter is good at English, but her best subjects are art and drama, both of which I was terrible at. She's also very sporty, which I wasn't at all.

SingingSands · 25/07/2021 20:27

No. My DD is a maths whizz. Straight A's all the way through school. I was that kid who cried in every maths lesson and still struggle with it now.

pointythings · 25/07/2021 20:27

Kind of half and half. DD1 is good at maths and the humanities - I totally failed maths but was good at humanities. DD2 got good GCSEs in maths by dint of incredibly hard work, but it isn't her forte - but she nailed English Lang and French, which were my absolute strengths. So a mixed bag.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/07/2021 20:27

No. I was good at English and History. DS hates reading and excels in Maths.

dementedma · 25/07/2021 20:28

I was shit at maths as were all 3 DCs. However two of them turned out to be very musical, doing music at higher and Advanced Higher. they certainly didn’t get that from me!

MargaretThursday · 25/07/2021 20:30

Yes. Though Dh was similarly scientific (though less biased towards maths than me) to me so the poor dc had no chance of being anything else!

AliMonkey · 25/07/2021 20:31

Mainly no. DD is pretty good at maths. DS probably would be if he tried. But neither are as "naturally" good at maths as DH or I (or rest of my family). Both are brilliant at languages and DH and I both struggled with those.

bonbonours · 25/07/2021 20:36

I'm a languages geek, my girls are good at French but my son seems to take after my useless at languages husband. All my kids are bookworms and good at English like me though.

peaceanddove · 25/07/2021 20:39

Yes. I was very good at Art and English at school, and went on to study English at university. DD1 is a very talented artist (much better than me) and excelled at English at school, too. She's off to art school in October.

DH was always the top of set one in maths at his grammar school and was awarded the maths prize at the end of 6th form. Took A Level Double Maths and got an A (obvs). DD2 also very gifted at maths. Level 6 at primary school. Top of her Further Maths group at grammar school. Predicted A at Maths A Level. It must* be genetic?

Dozer · 25/07/2021 20:40

No! Not so far, at least.

One DC is a little bit musical, like me.

Melassa · 25/07/2021 20:41

I was good at maths and languages, DD is good at STEM subjects, although less strong in maths and not particularly gifted in languages (despite being bilingual Confused). She’s also good at art, as were I and DP.

Sports wise she is good at “balance” sports, like skating, skiing, climbing etc., but not at all coordinated with ball sports. Both DP and I were pretty good at ball sports (tennis, volleyball etc.) but DP is also good at balance sports, whereas I just fall over, so she definitely got that from him.

None of us are musical in the slightest and we all sing horribly out of tune. Singalongs in the car can be terrifying.

lljkk · 25/07/2021 20:47

Math: we're all good at math; DC are much more confident than me because they had great teaching

MF Languages: I am good/excellent, DH & DD are passable, DSs have poor language skills -- they had poor language teaching

Sport: DC all good but not excellent, me no talent - always the slowest & weakest & bad coordination, DH fair to excellent

Performing Arts: DD pretty good but only grade 3 violin to put that in perspective, some DS's not embarrassing, me terrible, DH would never try

Writing: me & DD excellent, 2/3 boys are good; DH & youngest DS not so good

Cooking: all passable, youngest DS has a passion for it

Drawing: me & 2 older DC can draw well, others not so great

AgileSlug · 25/07/2021 21:01

One of mine: DS shares my geeky love for geography and fondness for writing. DD1 is a fantastic artist which is lovely, but not a talent I or DH ever had.
