Neighbour's constant Sunday morning DIY - hammering, drilling, sawing, huge pieces of wood

My neighbour constantly does DIY on his house. Sunday mornings early start is a newer thing. This morning the wood has been noisily brought in - huge planks of wood. It's been sawed to size in the back garden. There's been hammering and drilling against my bedroom wall.

He's tried to sell his house several times but it's overpriced. I've seen his photos of every room of his house - I can't see anything to account for all the constant DIY over the years. I've asked and he's said shelves or work on his kitchen or bathroom. The pictures show no obvious changes.

What is he doing?

He could be making stuff that he sells? I have a neighbour that uses his back garden as a 'workshop'. Thankfully he has the good grace to only use it 9 - 5 weekdays.

It's a disease.

And I'm putting it out there: all the pointless, noisy DIY shite is always, but always men.

Gavel.

My utter sympathises. People are selfish twats we have Neigbours of went on for three years of sporadic building an extension and continue to be continually doing stuff in their garden. Coupled with constantly loud children shit music and loud telephone conversations.. my utter sympathies

I don't mean it rudely OP but i can't see how it is your business?

It's his house, not yours, what he changes or whether he decides he needs or want to is his personal opinion that has absolutely nothing to do with you, the same as he decor in your house doesn't need or require his opinion or approval. It's a bit odd to be looking up images of his house (and then checking again to see what's been done) and asking for details of what he's doing, I would be very uncomfortable if I thought the neighbours were monitoring me so intensely. It is, presumably, the party wall you can hear drilling in, not 'your bedroom wall', but in fact his own.

The DIY noise must be frustrating of course but as long as it's within the lawful times it is just one of those things. Hopefully he'll sell at some point and move on.

Just ask him to start later?

ThePlantsitter · 25/07/2021 11:27

What time does he start? All him to start later if pre 10am (I think 9 is ok personally but start with 10).

Our neighbours built a HUGE conservatory during lockdown. It wasn’t great but I expect we’d have found each other much more annoying without something to focus our irritation on.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 25/07/2021 11:41

It was just after 8 this morning and has now finished. It's the constant DIY every week. I just don't understand as there is never anything to show for it.

That’s really not on to start so early on a Sunday. Ask him to start later. If he doesn’t complain to the council, if he was having a building contractor he would be subject to Mon-Fri, Sat morning only, no works on Sunday. He is a CF.

TheBitterBoy · 25/07/2021 13:37

You have my sympathies. Neighbour spent all of the last weeks lovely weather pressure washing and sanding stuff in his garden. Started at 8 and appeared to take no breaks until 4 or 5 pm. It was torture

Eleoura · 25/07/2021 13:41

He is building a dungeon under his house to keep the neighbours in!!!! Grin

Have you you spoken to him about it? Hi 'Jim', I've heard alot of drilling, sawing on Sundays lately. Is it possible you could start later, say 9am, so I'm not woken up?

PandemicAtTheDisco · 25/07/2021 14:33

I'm not going to bother saying anything because he is a bit difficult and it's not worth the hassle. I try to always be polite with him.

He generally tells me when he's doing the kitchen etc - he has lots of suggestions, ideas and advice for what he thinks I should be doing to my house which he is very keen to share. He seems to be working in the loft at times but the dungeon idea does seem likely - he doesn't get on with many neighbours and is often shouting at them.

He's done shelves at least 3 times so far this year. It does seem as if he gets in the professionals every so often too so many he makes a right mess with the DIY himself and then he pays to get it fixed?

Another neighbour says he used to smash things up - I've heard shouting mostly but I've heard things knocked over a few times - never anything that sounds like a rampage.

He used to ask me to look at his estate agent photos and give opinions and look at how they'd presented it. It's always looked fine but he blames them when his house doesn't sell. He thinks they are all useless and now uses obscure estate agents instead.

If he is making drilling noise at 8 on a Sunday you should challenge it.
