Any recommendations for Newcastle?

So I’m going for a few nights in a couple of weeks; never been, staying very centrally and won’t have the car with us (me, DH AND DD2 who is 16)

Can anyone recommend places to go things to do restaurants to try etc? Thanks!

You can get the metro (light railway) from the centre out to the Coast (Tynemouth, Whitley Bay).

Neondisco · 24/07/2021 22:18

What kind of thing do you like to do op? I live there so can probably help. Also are you here mid week or weekend?

RJnomore1 · 24/07/2021 22:26

Ah thank you both!

We are midweek, Monday to Thursday. We like to walk round new cities, see the sights, museums, shops and just Potter and get a feel for places. I’m thinking pretty much everything will be open again?

The Baltic museum is excellent (free!)
Centre for life (not free)
Discovery museum (free!)

All well worth a go.

Get the metro to tynemouth, walk down to the fish quay, buy fish and chips, get the ferry across to South Shields and get the metro back into town.

The stack in the centre of town is good for drinks and food.

PotteringAlong · 24/07/2021 22:31

The quayside seaside is still up if you want to sit and watch the world go by for a bit.

CarrieBlue · 24/07/2021 22:34

The castle is worth visiting and the cathedral. The Life centre is brilliant.

Neondisco · 24/07/2021 22:41

Yeah most things are open but you need to book entry for museums and galleries. As well as book most restaurants.

Baltic, discovery museum, Hatton gallery, great North museum, Side gallery are all interesting. Also Newcastle Castle. If you like old architecture grey street is quite nice too. There's also some remains of the city wall.

Tyneside cinema is nice, in a heritage (but renovated) building

For food and drink I like central for sourdough pizza, vegano, by the river Co, rehouse does nice pose and is in a tudor building! Dabawhal and or my dheli do good Indian food. Fat hippo is good for burgers. Great British cupcakery is nice for cakes in the Quayside. The granger market has started to get a few small more casual food places and the market is worth a look.

A little walk along the Quayside is nice. They've just put up some fake grass, big planters and deck chairs to make it a bit of an urban park for a place to relax for 5.

There is a boat trip either up or down the Tyne which is quite good.

I'd also say the metro to tynemouth and whiteley Bay is worth a trip. It is probably 30 min from town.

The walk from the Hancock (Great North Museum) through the university quadrangle, past the Monument, down Grey Street, past the Castle and High Level Bridge, down the steep old mediaeval stairs and to get you under the Tyne Bridge and/or to Side is brilliant. There are good restaurants down on the Quayside and much all along the way.

Kaltur for fabulous tapas. The pizza stall in the Grainger Market used to do fresh delicious calzone for £1.50 pre covid. Pet Lamb Bakery in the Grainger Market too. Fenwick department store is an attraction on its own. Exhibition Park, I think the boat hire is back.

Walk along the Quayside, go up the Baltic and explore the Ouseburn area. Cook House is a fantastic restaurant there.

Tynemouth.

Walk down Grey Street from the City Centre to the Quayside.

Fenwicks department store is a Newcastle institution and the Food Hall has some lovely places to eat.

There’s a tour you can take of some of the old tunnels used to deliver coal to the Quayside.

Laing Art Gallery is free.

Grainger Market is a very large covered Victorian market.

You can easily get to the Metrocentre by bus or train if you want that kind of thing.

Ikeameatballs · 24/07/2021 23:09

I’d definitely get the metro to Tynemouth. Nice Main Street, excellent massive beach and the smaller King Edwards Bay. Lots of nice places to eat and the Priory ruin. I’d then walk along the riverside to North Shields fish quay which also has nice bars and cafes. From there you could get the passenger ferry to South Shields, fab beach park and cheesy funfair.

Walk through Jesmond Dene.

Victoria tunnel www.ouseburntrust.org.uk/visit-vt

Jesmond Dene House for a lovely afternoon tea or lunch/dinner.

I would NOT recommend 3sixty 3sixtynewcastle.co.uk/ despite the good views!

Yes I'd second all of these good recommendations!

I didn't know there were boats at exhibition park. I'll have to check them out.

Thank you all so much- loads of ideas to look at there. I’m very much looking forward to it. We are in Scotland and although things are open not everything is and is still a bit odd/ no one quite knows what’s going on so that’s why I was asking about things being open, good tips about booking in advance though. Thank you.

Beamish from Newcastle, the bus is vintage and using bus ticket you get reduced entrance fee to museum.
Millennium Bridge, the blinking eye is cool. The Sage is worth a visit the cake in the cafe use to be lovely.

Get the metro to Tynemouth. Walk down through Northumberland Park (lovely Victorian restored park on the edge of Tynemouth) to North Shields fish quay. Visit the Old Low Light - an 18th century lighthouse building now a museum- they do great coffee and have a really interesting exhibition at the minute about women.
Walk long the fish quay walk around the Tyne and up to the Collingwood monument then Tynemouth Castle and Priory. Tynemouth is very nice. Walk long the seafront to Long Sands and then along the beach (it is a fab beach) to Cullercoats bay ( small fishing village with beautiful bay) and lots of cafes. Keep going to Whitley Bay and the Spanish City. Just before you reach the Spanish City, on your left is a nice fish and chip place and a great cafe called Cafe 19.
De Meo's ice cream is just past the Spanish City - amazing family ice cream place. You can either go back to Newcastle on the metro or walk along the beach to St Mary's Island and lighthouse - you might see the seals and dolphins if you are lucky.
All of that is about an 8 mile walk but you can cut it as you like- metro stations in Tynemouth, North Shields, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay so easy to get back up to the toon.

Newcastle is a beautiful city. Walk around Grainger town- stunning. Don't miss: Grey St (has been voted the most beautiful street in Britain), the Central Arcade (absolutely beautiful old shopping arcade), the Grainger market, Old Eldon Square, High Bridge between Grey St and the Bigg Market, St Nicholas Cathedral, the castle and keep, the Side, Dean St, the Quayside, Sandhill with the old 16th century merchant houses, the Tyne and the bridges, the city walls and Stowell St (Chinatown), St Andrew's Churchyard. Loads of great eating places down Dean St and around the Quayside.
And then there is all the shopping if you are interested in that.

I love Newcastle.

LuluJakey1 · 25/07/2021 09:57

Oh and the Civic Centre- lovely building- and the War memorial on Barras Bridge called The Response - it's amazing. This is all the university area and the Great North Museum (the Hancock) is here.

RJnomore1 · 27/07/2021 23:18

Thank you all for the comments

I’m bumping this so I don’t lose it before I get organised!

If you head out of town a mile or so, Francesca’s Italian restaurant on Manor House Rd in Jesmond is superb.you didn’t used to be able to book, just wait in the bar, but I imagine that has changed.

Thanks to everyone on this thread for making my trip to Newcastle so brilliant 😊

Special thanks to @PotteringAlong - The Stack was amazing!! The Urban Garden on the Quayside is also really lovely, spent time there in the evenings.

The walk from the university of town was really lovely too.
