Boring houseworky question. Do I need a clothes prop?

Just hung my washing out and heard my mother’s voice in my ear! Do I need a clothes prop? Is there a benefit to having clothes higher in the air?

Stops the line going droopy.
Managed to get my sister a couple of wooden ones from a local fb seller. The metal extending ones can be a bit crap

Is a clothes prop (I assume it's a stick that you put on the washing line to hold it up?) not just to keep the weight of the washing on the line stopping long clothes and towels from hitting the ground?

So if your washing line is high enough and your clothes don't touch the ground, surely that's fine without?

Harpydragon · 24/07/2021 09:27

The pro means that as your line dags clothes won't end up trailing the floor. In my garden the prop means that my clothes catch more wine and the sun a bit easier. I cannot imaging hanging washing on a straight line without one

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2021 09:28

Big things like duvet covers might trail on the ground otherwise. I think the line must stretch over time.

You can make your own with a length of wood and just cut a notch in the end.

Harpydragon · 24/07/2021 09:29

Soo many spelling mistakes
Pro = prop
Dags = sags
Wine = wind

LubaLuca · 24/07/2021 09:31

Yes, you do! My sheets would drag on the ground if I didn't lift the lines up.

Lockdownbear · 24/07/2021 09:36

Scotland call them stretchers.
Yes I'd think they help lift stuff up to get more air movement.

PeonyTime · 24/07/2021 09:38

We do, because otherwise everything drags on the ground (trousers, towels, shirt sleeves, sheets.....). The line isnt high enough.

NeedWineNow · 24/07/2021 09:41

Yes, I always had one when I had a long line.

4PawsGood · 24/07/2021 09:42

They do help the washing catch more wind. But if your washing isn’t dragging on the ground then they’re not essential.

GalaxyGirl24 · 24/07/2021 09:44

Yes!!!!! I recently got one and it's changed my washing hanging out game 😆 also need one of those socks rotating things

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2021 09:44

I suppose the benefit is that if you're not very tall, so need to be able to reach a line that is too low to stop long things dragging. Maybe they're less common as people have grown taller and this happens less often.

Socktopus from Ikea. There is no alternative.

I've had several of the cheap pound shop/Wilko/supermarket ones and they've all broken within a year or two.

Socktopus are much more sturdy, even if they cost a little more.

I have a sock peg thing like this. Didn't get it from amazon but can't remember where exactly I did buy it.

Yes!

This You Tube link shows you how to make one:

I've bought so many cheap metal ones in two parts that collapse/break.

Husband knocked this up with a bit of wood from B&Q and also sanded it down so it wasn't rough

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2021 11:15
Shock

I'm obviously missing something because I'm astonished that someone would think that people would need instructions on how to cut a notch in the end of a piece of wood and actually go to the bother of making a video of the process.
