I have found rinsing first with cold water works for food stains, am no help on mud though - I can never get it out of white school polo shirts.

I haven't discovered any miraculous stain remover detergents.

The Sun is your best bet - leave clothes out on the line for an hour to a week (depending on sunlight) and the stain will disappear.

Elbow crease spray, pop in the washer, hang out in the sunshine/on the windowsill in the sun.

enjoyingscience · 23/07/2021 21:19

What are they stained with? Anything organic, especially tomato, wash and put out in the sun. UV is the best stain remover by miles. You might need to leave out fir a couple of days if it’s not super sunny.

Paint or anything inorganic, no idea, sorry!

Good old neat Fairy Liquid then wash with bio detergent. Use cool water for glue and paint stains. VANISH gold rub on is excellent too.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/07/2021 21:22

Mine go in a big bucket of cold water with liquid detergent. Soak for an hour, wring, then on a 20° wash. Then hung in the sun.

Orangedots · 23/07/2021 21:23

Ariel bio gel. Slather on the stain before washing and it lifts everything. Then leave out in the sun for added sparkle!

Fishkettlesgalore · 23/07/2021 21:25

Old fashioned Vanish bar of soap. Use with cold water. It's excellent.

Cluelessgardener · 23/07/2021 21:25

A long soak in napisan always works for me. In cold water and napisan. You can find it in the baby aisle

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/07/2021 21:25

I was a nursery teacher for years and used to go home with painted handprints and all sorts on my own clothes. For paint wet with cold water and rub with ordinary soap and wash at a cool temperature. Hot water will set the colour.

poorfanjo · 23/07/2021 21:26

Pink stuff washing powder it's amazing. Soak whatever in it for an hour, shove in washing machine boom stain gone

Lucked · 23/07/2021 21:29

Agree that tomato and poo stains clear with sunlight, even if just in front of a window.

For berry stains pour boiling water directly on to it.

General muck and food use a biological detergent.
Things to try- cycle with prewash, longer cycle, adding more water to the wash and washing a higher temperature.

Elbow grease spray xx

Pebbledashery · 23/07/2021 22:43

It's mainly paint and food stains. Had two dresses completely ruined this week, I don't mind so much as they are only cheap asda multipacks but it's just every day it's bags and bags of stuff! I'm going to raid my local bm bargains tomorrow and look for some of these things!

I use napisan for a rub and pre-soak and vanish soap to scrub the tricky stains.
Also add ecover bleach to laundry.

Can get almost anything out-and DC babies no longer but I am a genius at cricket white's stain removal!

EcoCustard · 23/07/2021 22:47

Ace bleach or/and sunshine. Gets stains out took takeaway curry out of my white linen top, kids poster paint stains, tomato pasta sauce stains and even butternut squash stains.

WhatsTheTimeMrCat · 23/07/2021 22:53

Sainsbury’s own brand stain remover (pink bottle, about £1.50) is much better than Vanish, in my experience. Apply liberally, leave for a few minutes, wash as normal. Doesn’t get everything out but works well on most stains for us.

Nuggetnugget · 23/07/2021 22:55

I really rate aldi washing powder in the green box.

I use a bit of Dr Beckhams too. Or vanish powder. Forgot about Napisan used to love than.

Branster · 23/07/2021 22:57

Ace - the one in the big 1l turquoise plastic bottle. Gets rid of every stain of any nature I ever used it on.
There is only 1 stain that nothing washes off (sap from wisteria cuttings - need to start a thread in that!)

Attheheart · 23/07/2021 22:58

Yes, I came to say the sun too. I learned this far too late in life and actually phoned people to tell them when a huge bolognese stain just disappeared like magic, I was so excited Blush

doublemix · 23/07/2021 22:58

Definitely pink stuff powder then out in the sun gets most things out of my DS's nursery clothes.

MaggieFS · 23/07/2021 23:01

What detergent do you use?

nattynoonoo821 · 23/07/2021 23:38

Sunlight. Its incredible.

whatswithtodaytoday · 23/07/2021 23:42

Vanish soap or the rub-on gel stuff (leave it half an hour to soak in before washing), and yes, sun. I leave stained clothes out on the line on sunny days, or on the bannister in the sun if its changeable.

I haven't found anything that gets sun cream stains out yet.
