We have a chance to move there ,
Are there any good special schools for autism?
Is it really busy in summer ,or do people tend to go to st Ives instead .
Nice locals??

Have you ever visited it?

Mousetown · 23/07/2021 18:47

I would strongly advise visiting first!

SoddingWeddings · 23/07/2021 18:51

Well, I grew up there and left as fast as I could aged 18 along with most of my schoolmates....

It's a very druggie town, has been for years but its exponentially worse these days.

Could you live outside of Pz? Marazion, Newlyn, Heamoor, Madron etc?

MIL lives there. She says the same.

Huge drug problem.

Yep, me too!

Paq · 24/07/2021 08:25

Every time Pz is mentioned it's written off as a "druggie town". There's a small, persistent drugs problem which is relatively easily avoided. There aren't 100s of people shooting up on the high street of a Saturday morning.

Schools are mixed, you definitely need to visit to see which one would suit.

Opportunities are limited for young people so once your kids hit their teens and 20s they are likely to leave.

I was in Penzance last week (staying in Marazion) and it was considerably quieter than St Ives, Padstow etc.
It is one of the most deprived areas in Cornwall and I would not want to live there. Marazion is lovely but packed with tourists in the summer.

I grew up not a million miles from there. It’s oft touted as a druggie town but I don’t think it’s that much worse than other places tbh. Certain areas to avoid, but that’s not unlike city life, and depending on where you come from it won’t be an issue. You might not even register it. Party drugs are rife in the area in general, though it took me coming home from university to spot that.

West Cornwall, and Cornwall in general, is quite deprived. I would recommend watching Simon Reeve’s documentary on BBC iPlayer; he’s spot on when he says ‘there are jobs but no careers’ so many ‘Cornish Maids’ like me left at 18 for university and never looked back. The same might be true of your kids.

We holidayed in Treen this year which is about 15 minutes west of Penzance, and spent a fair bit of time on PZ Promenade which was actually very pleasant and much less busy than St Ives (where we didn’t stop).

Schooling in Cornwall is different to here - people tend to have the choice of just one school. There are two in PZ, Humphry Davy and Mounts Bay (in Heamoor). There was always the impression that MB was the ‘better school’ and some PZ town kids went out to MB, but I have friends who went to both (20 years ago mind) and all did well for themselves in their own way (I met them at A level, so would have been the more academic kids from both schools). I have no idea about autism provision in either school, but you don’t specify if you’re looking for mainstream or not.

What will you be doing for employment? Will you be working in PZ or commuting?

I guess we don’t really have enough info about where you are now to pass judgement on whether PZ is better or worse. I live in leafy city suburbs in the SE and I would consider PZ as acceptable in parts, but I would also consider living more rurally.

All of West Cornwall is busy in the summer. Although Penzance itself isn't as busy as say St Ives (or Padstow in the North) as it doesn't have quite the same beach / harbour appeal, it's still massively busier due to the volume of visitors in the area. Things like the (relatively small) supermarkets are heaving, the car parks rammed, the local roads (small, single-carriageway A roads) chockablock etc. A drive that would take 15 mins in winter could easily take an hour in the summer with the traffic jams.

It's a blooming long way to get anywhere else in the UK (pushing 2 hours just to get out of Cornwall by road or rail, you could easily add another hour to that driving time in the summer in a busy weekend).

The weather - in spite of common perception, Cornwall is very wet most of the year. True, the winters are mild from a temperature point of view, but they are also very damp. Even when not pouring with rain, we often have a lovely 'mizzle' (misty drizzle) that just makes you just as wet!

Big shops are a long way away. Truro (about 45 mins) is the only city in the county but is not a big city. If you want IKEA / John Lewis, you'll need to go to Exeter (2-2.5 hrs). Plymouth is a bit neater and has some bigger shops (but not as good as Exeter).

Entertainment - no major sports, theatre or concert venues. You'd need to go to Plymouth for these. The Hall for Cornwall (Truro) puts on some smaller theatre and music productions. Cinemas in Cornwall are quite small too - no big multiplexes.

Agree with @careerchangeperhaps re: lack of culture and shopping experiences. There are some great small museums and galleries, wonderful scenery, world heritage sites etc. But if you love going to the big museums, and the theatre, and the cinema then you might miss that. If you love John Lewis you will find it very annoying to have such poor choice of fashion and home wares.

thecalicocat · 24/07/2021 22:42

Its nowhere near as busy as St Ives! Incomparable. St Ives is busy all year round.

FedNlanders · 24/07/2021 22:43

I have a child with asd and I wouldn't live there.

Kezzie200 · 24/07/2021 23:58

Remember if you do a 360 degree circle around Penzance, there is a lot of sea. So fewer places to site facilities, of all types.

Beware of pirates 🤔🤔🤔
