Rhesus Negative

Hello!

I was just wondering for any mums who are rhesus negative what actually counts as a sensitising event. I have a 2&1/2 year old and it seems nearly impossible to not be accidentally knocked in the stomach etc. Also once being given anti d how long does it protect you?

Thank you!

For me it was when I had a small bleed and then a more significant bleed later on

PuppyMonkey · 23/07/2021 17:09

I had to have anti D after a small bleed in second pregnancy. This was about a month before I gave birth. I’m not sure what you mean about being knocked in the stomach tbh.

Both my girls ended up being Rhesus Negative too.

If in doubt phone your maternity ward for advice. They won’t mind. I had an extra shot once, when I fell over in the shower (landed on my bum and didn’t bang my bump but called for advice and that’s what they suggested). I also had the standard one (30 weeks ish?) and one after birth. No idea how long protection lasts I’m afraid.

I didn’t have any shots at all for first pregnancy as dd was negative like me. For second pregnancy I just had one when she was born and her blood group was confirmed as positive. All was fine both times.

OnlyToWin · 23/07/2021 17:22

Of course I did not know she was negative until she was born but was happy not to have any shots during pregnancy and wait until she was born to see if I needed any.

jane1956 · 23/07/2021 17:29

obviously all changed but 40 yrs ago just given the anti D after son born, he is + and again 38 yrs ago another anti D nothing while pregnant though

That’s interesting. They knew my baby was positive and therefore I was offered the shot at 30 weeks (as well as after birth and when I fell). I thought the pre birth shot was standard if the baby is positive or unknown?
OnlyToWin · 23/07/2021 18:15

My midwife told me not to have anything at all that I might end up not needing anyway, so I just waited to see what I had and didn’t have anything at all until after my second dd was born.

OnlyToWin · 23/07/2021 18:15

That was in answer to @modgepodge

Scutterbug · 23/07/2021 18:21

Only had mine after the birth each time.

Whingey · 23/07/2021 18:36

Injection after birth of 1st child. 2nd child at 32 weeks as his blood crossed over to mine. All was well just had another injection after birth. Rolled up sleeve and cheerfully informed not in your arm Mrs whingey 😢

bumpertobumper · 23/07/2021 19:25

I am negative, three kids, no one ever mentioned the need or possibility of needing a shot during pregnancy. This thread is the first time I have heard of such a thing!?
All kids are positive so had a shot after birth each time.

I think it is something that is pretty big. I've got two ponies plus a 2.5 year old and have so far managed to avoid any big blows to the abdomen. Having my dose in a fortnight at 28 weeks. Same as last time (minus the toddler).

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 23/07/2021 19:54

It is extremely rare

I am B- and my first child was A+

Never worried after the anti-D shot. Basically, your bloods would have to mix, I think, which is actually almost impossible in utero Smile

Owlshouse · 23/07/2021 20:08

The chances of mixing are very low from what I have been told but I was instructed to ring the assessment unit if I experienced any bleeds during pregnancy or significant falls/bumps (including any experienced after anti d administered).

MimiSunshine · 23/07/2021 20:45

I’m rhésus negative and both of my children are positive.
I had a shot during both pregnancies (unknown baby blood group In utero) and after both deliveries when blood group was known.

I was told to go if i had a significant Knock to the tummy but general toddler behaviour was fine.

I think as lead to believe that the vaccines were actually for subsequent pregnancies rather than the current one really so I’m sure you’ll be fine but always call your midwife or MAU if you’re worried.

rockingthelook · 23/07/2021 21:35

i am A rhesus negative, the only thing I was made aware of was having an injection of Anti D after an amniocentetis, nothing else mentioned at all

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 23/07/2021 22:20

Ok, that's kind of weird because I had two shots with both pregnancies (DC now both teens), and a third one after DS was born because there was concern his blood may have crossed over into mine during labour.

My blood group is O- though, so perhaps that's why? O neg means you can't accept any other blood type in a transfusion. I wasn't told anything about sensitiving events, so it sounds as though things have moved on a fair bit from my pregnancies. Agree with PP's advice to call your midwife with any concerns, they will know what is the best thing to do.

MrsBirkett · 24/07/2021 00:13

Any trauma to the abdomen can result in a bleed which may not be obvious, but it has to be significant, a fall or a hard blow. You usually get prophylactic anti d in pregnancy now, this wasn't always the case so if your children are older you might only have got it after birth. If you recently had anti d before a fall etc, they might just check blood to see if you need another dose.
In any case its always better to phone for advice, no one will mind and it will put you mind at rest.
