Dd tested positive for Covid the week before last. She was actually pretty ill with it (and still isn’t 100%) and, although she works from home full time, she had the week off work. She told her boss on the Monday and forwarded him the email from NHS saying she’d tested positive.

He’s saying now that he doesn’t believe her, that the email isn’t enough proof, and he wants a doctors letter. Dd didn’t go to the doc as advice is to stay at home if you’re positive. The doc is saying it’ll cost her £30 for a letter.

I’m just wondering how the docs can write a letter if they didn’t see her, and why the nhs email isn’t proof enough for her boss. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

I should add that dd doesn’t live at home and is sorting the situation herself. I’m just curious about paying for a letter and the nhs email not being proof enough for her boss.

You're supposed to self certify for the first week anyway. Her boss is being a right old twat and probably not acting legally (though hopefully someone with proper knowledge will be along soon). If I could possibly leave this job I would because who wants to work for a Dickens character??

Thanks for your reply @ThePlantsitter.

I work for a charity and she works for a multi National company so I don’t know how things work in her world! Like I say - I’m not getting involved as she’s more than capable but I am curious.

Oh well there'll be a policy then I'm sure. She needs to find it. I doubt it is £30 every time you have to stay at home for being ill!!

She can self certify without a doctors note for 7 days. That will be in her company policies/handbook.

The NHS letter is adequate evidence.

I am certain that if she sent the managers email and the letter to her HR business partner with a polite enquiry to clarify both points they could provide her manager with guidance Wink

Thank you @TSSDNCOP :)
