Already got an exercise bike. What's better about the Peloton?

Need to lose weight. I've got an exercise bike that was about £100. Use it occasionally but not as much as I should.

What is better about the Peloton that makes it £1750. My friend has one and she says "It's got a screen and lots of classes"...but surely I can just watch You Tube on my TV? What am I missing?

@MaMelon

The marketing.
😂 Well this is what I'm thinking! I don't get it? But I would like to know genuinely if there are major benefits that I don't know about?

I don't have a Peloton myself, but some people get really hooked on the classes, personal bests and leaderboard aspects of it - people are motivated by different things and it's finding something that is fun for you so you'll keep doing it.

Guess it depends on whether you have an exercise bike or spin bike. I think spin bikes are generally sturdier so you can do the standing, standing jogs etc. You can get a spin bike that’s not peleton for less money and use the peleton app for £13 per month, or there’s loads of free spin classes on you tube. But not all spin bikes are created equal - you get what you pay for. The cheaper spin bikes can be a bit rubbish especially if you’re used to spinning on good quality bikes at the gym. So I don’t think peleton is all hype - it’s a good quality bike and other similarly good bikes (eg keiser) are similarly priced.

If you've already got a bike, try the Peloton app (free for a few weeks then £12.99/m). I use the app with a standard spin bike and, to be fair, the classes and instructors are fantastic. You have to gauge your own resistance and don't go on the leaderboard so you miss out on some of the 'community' aspects which is what a lot of people get hooked on. If I get a big bonus or other windfall I'll probably get the proper bike but I'm more than happy with my current set up.

Hi OP. It's actually a spin bike so a bit different from an exercise bike. You don't just pedal, but you follow a class where the instructor tells you to adjust either the cadence (speed that you pedal) or resistance, for different intervals. There are also intervals out of the saddle. You can do either live classes where all the people on the leader board are also doing it live, or other classes which have already happened, but you can still see on the leader board those who are doing it at the same time or everyone who has ever done it. Gives you competition against others if you want it, or it shows you how you're doing compared to other classes you've done of the same length.

What I love is the variety. There are new classes of all types every day, strength, yoga, cardio, meditation, running, cycling, stretching, walking, etc and you can filter based on length of class, instructor, music, difficulty, etc. There's always something new. You also get loads of stats about how many workouts you've done, calories burned, badges for doing different kinds of rides, etc, and you can do monthly challenges which give you bronze, silver or gold according to how much you do in a month.

It is expensive (we bought the Bike+, but used money from a cancelled holiday) and there is also the monthly cost for the app, so only worth it if you an afford it and will use it, but you can add all members of your household at no extra cost.

Thanks for all the answers - actually very helpful as I didn't even realise it was a spin bike 🙈

I actually think if I was going to buy a piece of equipment like this I'd get the Peloton tread.
Anyone have this? I'm much better on a treadmill than a bike.
