I’m forgetful / don’t retain much info

Hi there - hoping for some advice. I don’t seem to retain a lot of information and need to spend more time than others when learning / ingesting information. I don’t think very well on my feet in work settings, but outside of work I am fine. I’m only mid 30s and I guess I’ve always been like this. Any tips on how to make myself sharper?

No idea but I'm genuinely interested. I'm exactly the same as this. In work, I need to write down things that I need to do otherwise I forget.

Friends will mention memories from years ago, things that happened in school and I have no idea what they're talking about. Sometimes significant things that I really should remember.

My memory is really poor.

I’m pretty poor with school memories too TokenGinger

Do you think you could have SEN like dyslexia? My son has a poor working memory, so he struggles with retaining information. For example, if he was given a list of instruction with 5 steps, he may only remember steps 3-5.

Some employers will pay for an assessment and it will give suggestions for what's to support you.

Before that, you may be able to get screened which aims to give an initial view as to whether there may by something there

Newjobcrap · 21/07/2021 14:13

No I’m not dyslexic but thanks for the suggestion

Not sure what else it could be

I can remember practical steps very well

I don’t think my employer would pay for an assessment so perhaps I could try my GP

It could be Add. Attention deficit disorder. Makes it difficult to process too much information, visual learning is easier. Executive function can be difficult.

Pixissmoke · 21/07/2021 14:21

Following as I have this exact same problem..

toughdaay · 21/07/2021 14:23

Me too. I've self diagnosed myself with ADHD though.

hoochyhooha · 21/07/2021 14:24

As your user name, it could be stress. When you first start it's hard to take everything in and remember stuff Grin write things down? I find that my brain will only take so much information, especially when it's hot and I'm getting a bit flustered and worried about how I'm coming across to people. Cut yourself some slack and see if things settle down Thanks

I have the same problem too, waiting for an ADd assessment..someone I know has.adhd, and she suggested it, and sent a copy of referral questions

I can totally relate to what you’re saying. I know I’m better when I’ve had enough sleep and don’t eat junk. I’ve been fasting lately and eating much better and I’m definitely sharper and less foggy.
I’ve been taking floradix as well which is liquid iron and vitamins. Low iron can also affect your mental skills.
I don’t know which one has helped me most but definitely something seems to be working.

Interestingly, my manager asked me if I had been assessed for ADD/ADHD when I had been working for her for about a year, and again I have all of the same issues you mention.

Also similar to another poster above who mentioned about her son not retaining steps to an instruction. I struggle with that, too.

Kerplunkk · 21/07/2021 21:35

Have you bloods checked for B12 levels

MistySkiesAfterRain · 22/07/2021 01:30

Totally relate, to add to above I use bullet points and post it notes.
