Flip flops

Can anybody clarify this for me please?
I am in england
Met up with one friend yesterday, outside.
We both got out of our cars and she said "oh no. We have both broken the law by driving in flip flops "
Is she correct?
Has the law changed?
Is barefoot safer?
I have a sore foot from an injury and naturally avoid shoes anyway!

Thanks.
I knew there was something like that, but I had no idea where to look for it.

And more thanks for a factual answer, rather than " my neighbours aunties sisters boyfriend drove in flip flops once, he is dead now.
Drip... he died of smoking related issues 40 years after wearing flip flops

I never drive in flip-flops as it feels dangerous, I just take them off and drive barefoot. I'm quite surprised to see from that article that that also could be considered dangerous - it doesn't feel at all unsafe to me.

I like to drive barefoot too, my instructor said it was considered dangerous because if you had an accident it might be difficult to get out of/away from the car in an emergency - broken glass etc.
