“The player cannot be named for legal reasons”

I have been reading the news reports about the Everton player who was arrested. Obviously we should stay well away from speculating who it might be. I don’t know any of them anyway.

But I’m curious as to what the reasons could be for not naming him. Does anybody know - generally speaking - why the police and courts sometimes do this?

unless the victim was known to the accused and identifiable, I can’t see any other reason to withhold his identity.

Do you have any experience of criminal law? Reporting guidelines are there to keep everybody safe, and so not to prejudice investigations.

Look up the media reporting guidelines on the College of Policing website. Better to understand the rationale, than to make baseless bets.

31 yr old Everton player narrows it down to 2.
A two second Google gives so many reports.
It is impossible in this day and age to stop people getting information.

I mentioned injunction and that may not be the case here but still when the Daily Mail says footballer did something we can't talk about. How would I know that applies to a twitter rumour about John Smith caught with 3 escorts and not someone else?

I do see local news articles saying about not identifying people due to possible prejudice or to protect a minor but they are being published elsewhere internationally like these cases.
