The sunlight bleaching out tomato pasta sauce stains thing!

Hung out some washing (thanks previous thread) about 7pm to dry overnight.

Noticed a white polo with orange stains. I was about to put it in the bin then I thought,

NO, HANG ON. LET'S SEE IF IT WORKS!

Just been out to retrieve my laundry and IT'S GONE! The stain, not the laundry

How could I have doubted you, MN?

Yes! I learned this on MN and have been putting it to good use this week. In fact just about to put a wash on now so I can get DS’s bits out in the sun.

I was so annoyed the previous few weeks when it did nothing but rain. I had baby purée stains that needed bleaching but there was no sun to sort them out Angry

Will this get blood stains out of a white silk pillowcase??

FogHornInTheAttic · 21/07/2021 09:41

I did this yesterday!

Nohomemadecandles · 21/07/2021 09:42

@armanted

Not everyone has access to outside space, but surely people don't throw away white items without giving neat bleach a go first.
A multi pack Asda school polo? Sorry, yep I'd bin it! I don't keep bleach in the house.

Now though... I'm going to be the All Natural White Queen !

It works best on food stains.

Blood soak in cold water and then use biological powder to wash. You can also make a paste from the bio washing powder and leave that on before washing.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 21/07/2021 09:43

@BiBabbles when mine were at school i started to spray armpits with white vinegar before washing, worked well on stopping the crispy yellow effect of deodorant and took the lingering smell of sweat from sports stuff and white school shirts that was only revealed when ironing 🤢

UmamiMammy · 21/07/2021 09:44

I discovered this about 25 years ago while on holiday in Greece! I did a bit of hand washing part way through the holiday, one t shirt had a nasty red stain that I couldn't shift but i but it on the balcony to dry thinking I would take it home and use stain remover. By the time it was dry the stain was gone 😊

ElaineMarieBenes · 21/07/2021 09:45

Yes I did know this and yes it does work!

However I recently followed MN advice and used a dishwasher tablet to clean oven glass and OMG that worked! I mean really worked - the oven glass (inside and out!) is like new after three years of student neglect!

BertieBotts · 21/07/2021 09:45

You can do it in the rain! You can do it in a flat! I hang mine out of the window. Only dropped one and had to ask someone to help me get ir down off the roof ledge! Or I put them on an airer next to the closed window.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 21/07/2021 09:48

A multi pack Asda school polo

Works on the stains, but nothing can shift the end-of-year grubbiness.

wizbit93 · 21/07/2021 09:48

Any idea if it will work with mascara? I've ruined my pillowcases!

Vroomed · 21/07/2021 09:50

According to my mum, leaving stained clothes on line when there’s a hard frost will also help remove stains. Not tried it but she takes incredible care of her clothes and I believe her.

MotionActivatedDog · 21/07/2021 09:54

Yep it works! I do laundry for people and the ones with babies are always in awe of their tops coming back with all the stains gone! They think I’m lying when I say the sun takes them out! Grin

ancientgran · 21/07/2021 09:55

@Faranth

The important thing to remember is it has to be WET to work, so I get whatever it is absolutely sopping, to give it more time to work, and if it dries before the stain is gone, wet it again!

It really is like magic!

Yes throwing a jug of water over it as it dries a few times will shift the most stubborn stains in my experience.

It doesn’t need to be outside, just exposed to the sun. I dried a stained tshirt on the back of a chair in my kitchen last week. (Not helpful if all your windows are north facing but yes, works indoors too)

Spot wash with hydrogen peroxide (get it from the chemist) should remove the stain, then wash as normal in the machine and hang in sun to dry.
fairislecable · 21/07/2021 10:00

I have a white chopping board and this gets stained with red peppers or chorizo etc and I wash it and put it out on the patio table in the sunshine.

It completely removes the marks.

NotSorry · 21/07/2021 10:02

@tywysoges ooh I didn't know that!

I amazed my student son a couple of weeks ago when I got a curry stain out of his white hoodie using the sun method - I will pass that on to him for when he goes back to uni as they just stick it on airers and leave it to dry - I think the pegs I bought him are still in the pack Grin

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 21/07/2021 10:05

I done this the other day, cleared the tomato pasta sauce no bother but the yellow sunscreen stains are still there. Blah! Trying again today to get those out

Forestdweller11 · 21/07/2021 10:09

Okay I do this too to get stains out but .... (a) If you hung it out overnight how was it the sun ... And (b) did it not get darked on?

tywysoges · 21/07/2021 10:10

@NotSorry ooh yes, just tell him to stick it by the window Grin - I think the glass might filter some UV so could take a bit longer but definitely works.

Nothing useful to add re the magic powers of sunshine. But I love your username, that description on that thread was just perfect!
H328 · 21/07/2021 10:11

This is great to read. I'm going to try all of these suggestions.

I did read that it works on tupperwares that have gone orange with having had a tomato sauce in them and that didn't work for me at all, so I have never bothered with clothes. I will now though.

The dishwasher tablet on the oven door sounds interesting. Our oven is a complete horror show. Within about it 2 weeks of being professionally cleaned for £150 it looked like shit again

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 21/07/2021 10:12

It's great for lily pollen, which is a pig to get out of clothes otherwise!
