DS ill every few weeks

Not sure exactly what I am asking here I suppose I'm looking to see if anyone else has had similar issues. Since last September when my oldest DD went to preschool my DS has regularly been ill. In particular a bad illness in October when I couldn't get a doctor to see him but in retrospect a number of doctors have now said it sounds like he had bronchitis.

My main concern is how often he is ill. I feel because of Covid and doctors refusing to see and just telling you to treat illness at home unless it becomes serious. He did ended up in hospital last month due to low oxygen/breathing issues and he has now been given inhalers. They think he has asthma or viral wheeze. But other than this no one has seen him. I have decided to keep a diary and since May he has been ill 5 times. Every time I speak to a doctor they just say it's normal for young DC to get ill regularly.

I returned to work in March and up to now me and DH who has only been working part time have just worked around each other. Now DH is expected to go back full time and I just don't know how to balance it. If I used holidays for sickness I would have already used them all up already. I already work part time and can't afford to reduce my hours nor would they accept that request as we are busy.

I really don't know what I'm asking. It's just my anxiety is so high. I feel so frustrated at the lack of care my DS is receiving. Each week that I manage to stay in work and not have a childcare issue feels like a relief.

Hi OP. We had the same with DS when he started nursery (and for a long time thereafter). Repeated croup and lots of admissions. It sucks.

If he’s got viral wheeze I recommend getting a finger pulse oxymeter so you can check his oxygen at home.

Hope it improves soon.

I received an email from my daughters school a few days ago with a letter from the NHS attached. It said that due to the lockdowns and young children not being exposed to bugs and coughs and colds as they normally would they’re expecting an increase (and it stated bronchitis on there).

DD1 was ill a lot after she first started preschool and DD2 seems to have had a constant cold since DD1 went back to school after lockdown.

How old is DS? Our GP has been awful about face to face appointments. We ended up in a&e 3 times and eventually paid for a private GP appointment. Although it was expensive (£140) they did a thorough examination and gave some very straightforward advice after weeks of recurrent tonsillitis. We can also ring back for a paediatric referral. We're about 10 days in so far, fingers crossed, DD has finally managed some full weeks at nursery.

My 2 youngest (2 and 4) have been ill on and off for 6 weeks. Working is a nightmare. I’m exhausted; they’re probably exhausted too. I have to keep the other 2 home and self-isolate as the youngest always ends up with a cough or a fever. It’s so hard right now!!

Pre-covid, my third child used to get ill loads as a baby as she caught all the germs the older 2 brought in from school.

Thank you everyone I know there is no answer. I do think DS has gone from being exposed to nothing due to lockdown and then suddenly all sorts of bugs.

I have just had a look at the finger pulse oxymeter. I am definitely going to get one. They regularly used one in the hospital I never thought of it as something I could buy myself. Thank you for recommending.

He is 19 months. My DD I remember picking up bugs when she was younger but not to this level.
