What's up with Tesco prices?

Just come back from my local one. Quite substantial price hikes on loads of stuff since I was in on Sunday. Examples:

Quorn lasagne was £3 on Sunday, £3.50 today
Green beans, 69p/£1.40
Can Diet Coke, 59p/89p
Cauliflower cheese, £1.25/£1.60
Veggie sausages, £2/£2.75

...and on and on. Loads of stuff, and not stuff that was previously on offer either. A few pence, fair enough, I probably wouldn't even notice, but my shopping was over a fiver more than usual for the same stuff I buy every week. I don't think I've ever seen such steep sudden price hikes.

Lots of empty shelves too - don't know if the two are connected. Perhaps because distribution staff are isolating?

Anyone else's Tesco the same? Is it the same in other supermarkets?

I'm vegetarian (mainly vegan really, apart from the occasional pizza/leather bag) so I'd be behind this anyway. But I wonder if the sudden boom in vegan alternatives is anything to do with this? For years there was hardly anything available, certainly not in major supermarkets, now there's so much (Wicked fake chorizo bangers are one of the reasons I need to go shop at Tesco incidentally, they're completely delicious).

@TheLeadbetterLife

We've had no real shortages here in Portugal since the first week of the pandemic (bit of panic buying), and we have Covid too.

Most of what you're experiencing in the UK is a Brexit thing. The pandemic is a very convenient distraction from the realities of leaving the single market and customs union without a backup plan. It's hardly surprising that the government will be trying to blame everything on Covid for as long as it can.

I agree. Covid has become a useful excuse for a lot of things, from no olives on Domino's pizza (why?!) to a neat carpet to sweep the effects of Brexit under.

@BunnyRuddington

Were the Green Beans fresh or frozen OP? I haven't been able to get frozen green beans for weeks.

misses point of thread entirely

Do you have a Farmfoods near you?

I noticed that Tesco prices have always gone up and down, long before Brexit/ Covid.
However, I’ve tried other supermarkets and find it the most convenient. Large stores, everything spaced out, can do scan as you shop. Big car parks too.
Lidl and Aldi, like a cattle market. Much smaller, smaller choice , they want to rush you out. I think the check out staff have targets to scan your foods and get you out. There isn’t time for much small talk, unlike old Mavis at Tesco who can take her time when she’s serving you. Some people, older people like the personal touch.
I keep going back to Tesco after trying the alternatives.
