How long ago did you go?

Is there plenty to do?

How much of a ballache was the journey?

Such a rarely mentioned place I have to respond although I won't be much help!

I was there several times for a day or 2 in 1977/78 and there was absolutely bugger all to do!

The journey wasn't a ball ache at all because I lived on St. Vincent at the time.

I can say it was gorgeous and very peaceful.

I hope this at least gives a bump and someone responds who has been there in this century Grin

Yes! Just for day trips from St Vincent. But it is gorgeous.

I think you’d have to fly to Barbados, then to St Vincent, then boat or tiny plane to Bequia. So quite a ball ache and those connections are... well let’s just say that the timetables are more like aspirations.

It’s basically a small and pretty village, on a small and pretty island. It’s lovely if you’re on St Vincent already for some reason and want a change of scene, but it wouldn’t be my first choice for a standalone Caribbean holiday.

Ah thanks!

What is St Vincent like?

I am thinking of next autumn btw. We are fairly quiet people, we like a decent restaurant/bar/pub but we're not nightlife people.

We'd basically like to lie about in the sun, eat lots of fish, and do some walking.

I liked the sound of it because I heard it was quiet, unspoiled and not too "English".

St Vincent is the Caribbean you don’t see in holiday brochures....desperately poor and heavily dependent on drug money. And that’s before the volcano starts erupting 😂

From memory (a few years back) there’s only about three cafes on Bequai and you can literally walk round it in an afternoon - you’d get very bored even if you’re mainly into sun lounging. People mostly go there as a route to Mustique or as an alternative to St V if they’re sailing and need a stop - it’s not really a holiday destination on its own.

Wineandroses3 · 20/07/2021 18:25

Yes I have been to Bequai! It was about 2004 I went and stayed on a boat called the friendship rose. It was beautiful, I got sunburnt so a local picked me some aloe Vera which was amazing for my skin and helped it to heal. Bequai is only very little. Not that much to do. The restaurants were few and not up to much - might have changed now though. Went to Grenada for the day, that was nice, not too touristy. The flight was ok, but I didn’t have kids back then, not sure i would cope with kids on the flight. The one thing that sticks out was the snorkeling. I also went scuba diving. I was nervous but it was truly amazing and so beautiful.

Bequia is my favourite Caribbean island. It's not glitzy like some, feels more of a 'real place'
Hassle to get to, we flew via Barbados and friends flew via St Lucia although I think Virgin are scheduled to fly to St Vincent soon.

It's a small island with perfect beaches, good snorkelling and Scuba.
There are minivan taxis so you don't need to hire a car plus a lot of folk walk.
Nightlife is very low-key but there are some lovely restaurants with a local vibe.
Happy to share more if you want to PM me

My friend went last year. First long haul trip and loved it but happy to waft and walk and swim and snorkel and chat and chill.

MyCatDribbles · 20/07/2021 18:33

I was in Canouan in 2019, I believe there’s a ferry / boat that island hops from st Vincent, which you might have to get to via St Lucia
Are you U.K. based?

Whaddayahear · 20/07/2021 18:59

Yes we're in the uk.

Where in the Caribbean would people recommend? Favourite islands?

We've been to the US and NZ, and have our usual holidays in Europe but never been to the Caribbean.

We don't like going to places that are too modern or built up, we like quite slow paced or new age vibe, and we like to see the local culture and history. We also like nice food and booze.

I'd love to hear people's recommendations.

I got engaged there! we went over for a few days during a trip to St Lucia. It was lovely but there's not that much to do and I didn't find the beaches that amazing
