There's a gang keeping me prisoner in my own house.

I get attacked every time I try and leave. Their parents are worse than they are and have even tried to attack my dog, and my children just for going in our own garden. They don't even let me sleep, and wake my baby up at 4am being loud thugs. Should I call the police?

My DW went to a meeting that turned out to be really positive, thus in a very good mood on a lovely summer's day. She had called me and all was well.
Walking past the local Market she came out from the underpass to see a pigeon pecking away in front of her.
Then out of the blue a Gull dived down and decapitated the pigeon right in front of her!

The pigeon flapped around spraying blood as DW was stood in absolute horror!

She rang me gibbering and is traumatised to this day!!

1 of the only downsides to living by the sea. The gulls here are the size of small dogs, it's 300 degrees but can't sleep with the windows open because of the noise. I wfh on calls all day and all I hear is, what's that noise? Are you by the sea? And everytime I see a tourist feeding them I what to scream at them to stop it. Other than that I guess they're okay 😂

exiledfromcornwall · 20/07/2021 22:29

Witnessed one attacking a pigeon in our town centre the other day. It was really gruesome, and it left the poor thing injured but still alive, much to the distress of passers-by. And this is in a town a considerable distance from the sea.

namcybotwinbloom · 20/07/2021 22:55

@IamEarthymama seagulls are proper awful. They are so blatant with everything. They remind me of the Alfred Hitchcock film the birds

marktayloruk · 20/07/2021 23:03

They look like Australian desert gulls. Visually very similar to certain European seagulls. They are attracted to some food smells more than others, such as coconut, lychee and other exotic fruits. If your shampoo (or shower gel) has such aromas, they will indeed swarm like gangs. There are two things you can do to make them visit your neighbours instead (1) use different shampoo, (2) stand on your head. The first can be very effective with any gulls, but the latter only works with Australian gulls.

swimlyn · 21/07/2021 00:29

Seagulls are protected. I found that out reading about that awful man who beat one to death a few days ago on a beach.

Perhaps he was making a sound recording to sell online?

Lots of MN customers for that I’m sure…

lborgia · 21/07/2021 01:53

In Australia we get attacked by magpies. We'll, not like uk magpies, but that's what they're called. You need a bicycle helmet like this-

There's a gang keeping me prisoner in my own house.
irisetta · 21/07/2021 07:44

They're clever little buggers, has anyone seen this?

Also, a man has just been prosecuted for battering a seagull to death in front of onlookers! You can't harm them, they are classed as wild birds and so are protected...

Prinzy · 21/07/2021 08:08

What a MN post this was 👏🏼👏🏼😁 got me good OP

bigbluebus · 21/07/2021 08:17

They're obviously crap parents. Friends have got a terraced holiday cottage at the coast. Seagull had built a nest on next door's roof in the gutter. We went to stay. Day 1 - 2 chicks in the nest. Day 2 - 1 chick in the nest, 1 dead on the ground outside front door, having toppled over the edge. Few days later chick 2 met it's end in the same manner!

jugOFpimms · 21/07/2021 08:45

i once had a seagull literally take my phone out my hand & fly off with it Shock ....they did drop it onto the helipad at work Grin .....so beware if you go outside with your phone or anything else id imagine

DaisyBooToo · 21/07/2021 09:06

Without a word of a lie was sitting in my friends garden having a few drinks and a huge gull appeared to try and steal or snacks. My friend jumped up and punched it…….it literally pooped itself and flew away nursing its pride! Was hilarious.

Dontdripme · 21/07/2021 09:07

Bullies!

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 21/07/2021 09:07

We live by the coast. Get a super soaker and keep it by the front door. Game changer!

fartypantsmummy · 21/07/2021 09:10

Several cheapo Nerf guns for you and your kids is what you need. If your and your family's shooting skills are anything like mine you won't hit them but the ping on a surface beside them is enough to un-nerve them and they will bugger off. Worked for our family of invading flying rats, I mean pigeons.

fartypantsmummy · 21/07/2021 09:12

Pick up the 'bullets' afterwards so the bastarding things don't eat them.

ConfusedCarrie · 21/07/2021 11:36

@ScaredGul
Did the vulture sounds work? I'm currently being held hostage by Clacton Clive and his crew Wink

That reminds me - slightly off-topic but regarding birds.

I live in London and don't often see birds in my garden as it doesn't have any trees. However, the other morning I went out to water the plants and I was treated to the sight of an enormous grey bird doing pretty much a vertical take-off. What I really noticed was its wingspan and its wings flapping - I mean, I heard "flap flap flap".

Any ideas on what kind of bird it might have been?

Musmerian · 21/07/2021 11:56

Last night, at 1.23 there was a huge kerfuffle downstairs. Dog was going bonkers. A seagull had got in through the cat flap and into the utility room and was being chased by the dog and the cat. I had to pick it up and take it out.

TroysMammy · 21/07/2021 12:06

@AlfonsoTheMango could it have been a grey heron? I know they are in London because I saw one in the penguin pool at London Zoo 2 months ago.

Nanasueathome · 21/07/2021 12:22

@OrchidLass

I was sitting in my sister's kitchen (on the coast) eating a sandwich and monster of a seagull marched into the kitchen and took my sandwich off my plate. If that wasn't bad enough it came back a couple of minutes later for my packet of crisps. When I told my sister she said 'oh yeah, that's Dave', like it was a totally normal occurrence.
That’s excellent My sister lives in Plymouth and they regularly visit Looe Only ever eat indoors there as she says the seagulls are ferocious

It might have been! I shall look for photos of grey herons on DuckDuckGo. Thanks!
