Can someone please help me work out this basic salary calculation?

I am blaming the heat, but for the life or me I can't work out how much money I would take home here

Salary is 26,000 pro rata. Working hours 1.5 days per week. What would I take home after tax?

I'm guessing not an awful lot but need to work it out asap

Would you pay tax on that? Surely it would fall under the threshold.

ElizabethG81 · 19/07/2021 13:58

If it's a standard 5 day week, then it'd be about £7,800, and you wouldn't pay any tax or NI on that as long as you have no other income

Iluvfriends · 19/07/2021 13:59

There's good tax and ni calculators online.

So about £650 per month then?

I would certainly need to get some additional work - even an extra day, as that is not a lot.

Basically - I work full time now on ok salary. Would prefer part time work for a period but don't want to be worrying about money either. The job itself is really exciting.

Does anyone know if there would be particular implications if I took additional work on, like freelance? In my hazy recollection you would then have to pay 2 types of tax, is that right?

Just the normal national insurance and income tax but it may take a while to get on the correct tax codes.

You’d need to register as self employed and fill out a Self-Assessment tax return. You don’t pay different tax - it’s all income tax - but you need to factor in difference in when/how you pay it.

The National Insurance is different for employment vs self-employment income.

Exactly what I make it.

Ok thanks everyone. For the moment, I am only having an interview first of all. They have said this would be offered as a contract or freelance.

Presently I work full time and therefore could not become freelance straight away even if I accepted the role. I would need to consider whether I could take on a job with a much lower salary - I don't have a mortgage to pay off now on the plus side.

It is in the right sector for me and not completely unrelated like the job I'm in now. I worked freelance for 2 years a while ago and have the type of skills that lend itself well to freelance work. Lots to think about if I am offered the role!
