Carrying water while running

Posting here a) for traffic and b) because I can't find a running topic.
Is there a water bottle/flask you just strap to an arm or leg so you don't have to hold it while running?
TIA.

For short runs in the heat I use one which fits my hand with a strap. I much prefer to O shaped bottles. You need need to hold it really, the strap does it for you - just squeeze to drink.

OrangeBananaFish · 19/07/2021 15:52

I have an o shaped bottle for shorter runs on hot days or medium runs on not so hot days. Usually I don't take anything for 10k or less, but Saturday morning 5k I did and was glad I did.

I have the belts with water bottles, but I'm not keen on them. The bottle is no bigger than my o shaped one.

I've got a backpack with water in for anything in double miles, but that's a pain too TBH

OP, very experience runners have tried to help you and you’ve been a bit rude I think. You don’t need to follow their advice (of course) but there’s no need to be snippy about it either.

Actually I think the opposite. Some of the experienced runners were coming over as patronisning
WTFisNext · 19/07/2021 16:37

I don't get on with running belts I'm still too fat but a lot of my running group use them and collapsible water bottles for shorter runs in hot weather.

They recommend the combo of belts and bottles from Lunabands www.lunabands.co.uk/collections/running-belts

Because carrying water in hand causes me other issues I'm a dry runner that makes a point of drinking like a camel preparing for a desert trek the day before. I've also dropped my pace so I'm not pushing my body, just keeping it in the habit of moving faster than a walk.

Last bit of advice, 7am is already too hot for me at the moment. 6am is perfect, not quite 20 degrees so far more manageable I miss winter running!

I am an experienced runner, I hope I did not come across as patronising. It's always hard to 'talk' to someone online when you don't know them at all.

Most people have problems with running immediately after drinking.
Most people if properly hydrated would not need to carry water with them for a 25 minute run.

As with all advice you take what you want and ignore then rest, though I do acknowledge that you weren't asking for running advice.

Baycitystroller · 19/07/2021 16:56

For a short run you shouldn’t need anything.

Have to say I’m amazed to see people running in this heat under blazing sun. Madness.

How do you combine a water bottle with the luna belt? I have a similar style belt- basically a lycra tube with slits in, it hold keys, phone and tissues- and I can’t work out how to secure a bottle in it.
WTFisNext · 19/07/2021 19:35

@Boood the women I run with slip the collapsible one in the zipped bit. It starts out bulky but manageable because they're only small bottles to start with...but perfectly sized for hydration for small but hot weather runs.

I haven't tried it myself, that's just going on what they've said.

Quirrelsotherface · 19/07/2021 19:52

Decathlon do a really great, simple bottle with a hand strap

Lenorestjohn · 19/07/2021 21:01

Surely you just wear one of these…

JellyBabiesFan · 19/07/2021 21:12

I do always drink a lot of water just before I go out

This is part of your problem. You are bloating yourself with water and not hydrating properly ie not getting the minerals your body needs.

You need to ensure you have a good quantity of water before going to bed so you are not waking up dehytrated.

You will be better off having an electrolyte drink rather than water before a run if the weather is like it is now. Providing you have hydrated well before going to bed you will not need to down vast quanities of fluid before setting off for a 25 minute run.

Personally I avoid the tablets containing caffeine as they will increase your body temperate.

BigButtons · 19/07/2021 21:16

When I used to go on long cross country runs I would wear a water backpack which had a long straw attached. It was very useful.

TheOrigRights · 19/07/2021 21:25

This reminds me of when I was due to race a Spring half marathon and it was due to be 25C or something ie HOT for us soft UK lot.

I don't mind running in the warm, but racing is grim.

So, I Googled how to run in hot weather. The top links were all about how to dress for the Death Valley Ultra marathon - where they can have temps up to 53C FIFTY THREE CELCIUS!

Anyway, I gave myself a little talking to and calmed the fuck down.
It was a horrid race but I did get 1st in my age cat so I guess everyone else found it hard, too.

Trivia - the aforementioned Ultra is about to start its 2021 event - 4am our time - I just looked it up.

TheOrigRights · 19/07/2021 21:26

FWIW, the only time I get stomach troubles during or after a run is when it's really warm, probably because I haven't drunk enough.

I only carry water on longer runs and in peak summer, have various hydration packs and a handheld bottle and all sorts. Plus if went through town there are one or two water fountains there. But seconding the mentioned above once tactic of hiding a bottle on your route - if you don't want to carry liquid, that's the easier option. E.g. I have a one mile circuit around my house, and if it was a real issue I'd leave a bottle tucked by the front wall and just run loops stopping for a drink. Or you could do the same with stashing it in the hedge or by a bench at the park, or leave stuff in your car if you've driven to a running spot.

I did have one sports bottle nicked leaving it in sight of a path at the park, so best done with cheap e.g a coke bottle and not a fancy one. Or hide it better than I did!

MrsDThomas · 20/07/2021 13:11

I have a compress sport hydration vest. Holds a bladder of 1.5L and plenty of pockets for phone and keys, snacks etc.

I also have Salomon soft flasks. They are great and come in 250/500/750ml. The fit in the front of the vest.

I use mine all the time.
