Is heat stroke just from time in the sun?

Currently going through a heatwave with some high temperatures in the late 20s. Not used to this weather. I didn't spend much time in the sun yesterday except for the 15 minutes going to work in the morning. My day turned out to be a one from hell. I really don't tolerate the sun or the heat very well. I worked from 11 am til 11pm. All I got was a few minutes to eat a meal. Not even a proper break. I kept drinking water during the day but it wasn't a proper break as such. I kept putting down my water bottle too and walking away from it.

By the time I finished work, I wasn't even finished the work but I just had to go. There's showering facilities at work and I wasn't even allowed 5 minutes in the middle of the day for a shower. That would have helped me.

It was a day from hell with more of the same on the way this week.

My body felt so sore going to bed last night. As if I ran a marathon. I also felt sick and sick to my stomach too.

Th sweat poured from my forehead all day and I was hardly allowed a proper break in the middle to the day to recuperate and cool down. I was expected just to keep on going.

I dont tolerate the heat very well the last few years, but do you not have access to a fan or anywhere cool?

HilaryBriss · 19/07/2021 08:37

Are you in the UK? If so, you are legally entitled to a 20 min break 8 you work over 6 hours.

beautifullymad · 19/07/2021 08:44

I think if the body repeatedly overheats with no down time to recover it's called heat exhaustion. Can be just as serious.

BouncyDaisy · 19/07/2021 09:50

I'm not in the UK but there's similar work laws in my home country too.

I was scheduled to be in work yesterday evening from 6 til finish. Finish could be any time 11pm/12pm/later. But I was dragged into work for noon. Then it was work all day. I knew what I needed yesterday in the middle of the day and that was a break for a cool shower and a drink of cold water. I was denied a break. I got a few minutes to eat a meal but that was it. It was just them few minutes to eat the meal and even at that my time was broken and divided to work. It really wasn't appropriate time off. I felt sick last night and all night I didn't even sleep properly.

I have a similar week going forward and I'm dreading it.

I wondered that yesterday. Worked 13hrs 7.30am-8.30pm but left a hour late. Had about 20minutes break which was the only time I sat down. The break was still in a boiling hot, unventilated space, so didn’t help with cooling down at all. Drank water where possible, but probably not nearly enough for the temperature. Had a cool bath when I got home, and will try and drink plenty today to make up for it/ prepare for the same again tomorrow. Many workplaces aren’t set up for this kind of weather. Hope you feel better soon.

Overheating body and dehydration and it can make you so poorly! Just be careful not to heat up too quickly

Blueeyedgirl21 · 19/07/2021 10:13

Sounds like dehydration which can happen regardless if being actually in the sun etc
You need to drink A LOT
I drank 8 liters of water yesterday, 1 liter of sprite and a pint of apple juice and I was outside for 11 hours

Water is important, but if you're sweating a lot you need to replace the salts and minerals too.

Salty foods, juice, dehydration salts (dioralyte) can all help to replace elrctrolytes and keep the body functioning better.
