If you wanted to live in a small market town with good links to London where would you live please?

My dc are settled in various places across the uk, and the time has come for me to downsize. I don’t especially want to stay in the area where I now live, and as long as I can get to London fairly easily, I can go anywhere.

Please will you tell me where to go?! Or where you’d like to go if you could? Tia.

Petersfield is good for families about an hour into Waterloo or Clapham junction.

Phyllis321 · 19/07/2021 06:47

Banbury has good facilities, 40 minutes drive to Oxford, 50 minutes to London by train. Edge of the Cotswolds but much cheaper too!

Snowdrop30 · 19/07/2021 06:49

Saffron Walden - train goes from Audley End

ODFOx · 19/07/2021 07:00

St Neots. Between Cambridge and Bedford and on the direct line to KX.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/07/2021 07:10

Staines. Has a proper market twice a week, a lively high street, is on the river and has good housing stock. Oh and 38 minutes into Waterloo.

NigellasGuest · 19/07/2021 07:13

Berkhamsted. 28 mins to Euston.

I live in one
42 min fast train to London
But I don’t want to say where
It’s so perfect that worry that loads will descend in time!

Grantham in Lincolnshire is 1 hour or less on the train - the surrounding villages are beautiful, good grammar schools and cheaper property than the Home Counties. Lots of Londoners have moved here over the last 10 years for the quality of life.

When you say getting to London fairly easily, do you mean a few times a week or twice a year?

Chesham or Amersham, Bucks. At the end of the Metropolitan line.

Theworldisfullofgs · 19/07/2021 07:47

What's your budget?

Purplewithred · 19/07/2021 07:47

Depends on what you mean by ‘good links’ and what your budget is but

  • Surrey Hills towns (farnham, godalming, dorking etc) all have good links to london, airports, and surprisingly fast to the coast
  • Winchester is lovely
3WildOnes · 19/07/2021 07:56

Farnham, Winchester, Amersham, Beaconsfield, Lewes

Snailhaterz · 19/07/2021 08:02

Do research train times thoroughly! I moved somewhere in the West Country, and I'm a 20 minute drive from a station where there are lots of trains to/from London and a travel time of 1 hr 20. BUT no really late trains back, so you can't go to the theatre/have a jolly evening out and get home afterwards.
