Up with suspected norovirus

All three of us (DH and DD2) appear to have been smacked with some sort of vomiting bug. With all of us starting to vomit at the same time this evening. MIL came over amazingly to help us tidy and look after DD while both DH and I were puking.

Neither of us tend to get sick, it's a shock to the system. DD is sleeping, waking to cough, sometimes a little sleep but nodding straight back off to sleep, which feels more concerning than a relief.

Hoping MIL can continue to be our saviour and take DD tomorrow. Neither of us are sleeping and I don't think we'll be in any fit state. Tempted to ask my mum to drop off some appropriate food. Everything we have in seems heavy and requires cooking, which involves energy I don't think we have.

Feeling so nauseous, like an awful hangover and as if I've taken a punch to the gut. Please send any tips and kind words Envy(not envy - well maybe if you who aren't in a vomit nightmare)

Dry, bland foods - crackers, toast, chips, boiled eggs. And/or fresh' watery foods like salad and fruit. Depending on what you can all stomach. Wouldn't even bother with actual meals if you're all that sick tbh depends how bad the vomiting is I guess. Ice lollies are good for nausea and hydration too. I also found lollies and boiled sweets good for nausea. (I've had HG twice)

norovirus will come back big
Another (not) gift of the covid crisis

Did it come on you all suddenly, OP?
From feeling fine to sick as a dog in < 1 hour or less?
That's a distinctive feature of noro -- the sudden onset.

Keep your fluid intake up, little frequent sips.

Thank you, this'll make up the list to send to my mum. I hope she's available to help!

My goodness, I wasn't aware of this. Thank you for sharing. We'll book some tests if we can stay dry enough to get out!

Yes, that pretty much describes it exactly. It's DH birthday (Happy Birthday!) and we'd had a takeaway on Saturday evening and had been making our way through various treats he'd been given. Thought I just felt a bit rotten from eating so much rubbish and then it was puke city!

Your child has a cough. The whole house isolated and gets a test. Not invites your MIL over.

Wrinklyeyes · 19/07/2021 05:49

Crikey, whether it’s Delta or Norovirus, your MIL is a saint.

Hope you feel better soon OP.

wjg65ka · 19/07/2021 05:51

We had this in may, utterly horrendous Sad

Rossypossy · 19/07/2021 07:01

We all had this a couple of weeks ago, it’s very contagious so lots of handwashing! Hand gel doesn’t kill Noro bugs. We think we caught it for DD at nursery.

It came on incredibly quickly, felt terrible and couldn’t keep any food or water down.

I would take dyrolite (so?) or any rehydration sachets and it will pass in 48 hours or so. Absolutely horrid so you have my sympathy.

I think some people forget there are other bugs and illnesses other than COVID Hmm

Realitea · 19/07/2021 07:09

There are other bugs but it’s worth checking. It doesn’t cost anything to check does it?
Norovirus is spreading throughout the uk and a huge amount of pupils have it at my dd’s school. I’m just hoping parents are testing just to rule out covid. Either bug is awful though. I hope we avoid both before they break up for summer

MyFartWillGoOn · 19/07/2021 07:23

Ugh, sympathies as we also had this the other week. Started with DS and slowly ravaged us all!

Orange flavoured lucazade in an ice cube tray and then sucking on one every half hour or so was the only way I could get any fluids down and give myself a bit of energy!

It did ease after 24 hours but I continued feeling unwell for another 24 after that

Feel better soon!

bloodywhitecat · 19/07/2021 07:26

Food poisoning?

Usual2usual · 19/07/2021 08:24

I also think maybe food poisoning from the take away maybe?

Either way you must feel awful we had a similar full family bug situation a few years ago just after Christmas and it was horrific, both DC had it worse so DH and I couldn't even have a minute to feel sorry for ourselves it was so full on and just miserable.

Plain fruit ice lollies helped massivley as did lucozade sport which was the only thing I could keep down.

Your MIL is amazing everyone just left us to get on with it which is fair enough because no one wanted to catch it.

lljkk · 19/07/2021 08:35

Noro has a typical incubation period of 36-48 hours. Where were you all, what were you all doing, Friday night or Saturday morning.

Good news is that it also passes quickly, very likely hugely better by tomorrow am. I stick to water only for at least 4 hours after last vomit, but depends how old your DD is if she can do that safely.

lljkk · 19/07/2021 08:36

oh wait, I misunderstood what OP said about when started: they were probably exposed Thurs night or Friday night, anyway.

LindaEllen · 19/07/2021 09:01

It sounds more like food poisoning to be honest. With noro you don't tend to all be ill at the same time as one of you would then infect the others in a chain reaction - whereas food poisoning would make sense as you all ate the same thing at the same time.

Adarajames · 19/07/2021 13:23

Red an article about an unusually high incidence of noro for summer currently doing the rounds, but as PP say, get a test sent to you. Maybe contact environmental health if you think it could be the takeaway, did the 3 I’ll eat something different to the one not sick?

sssigh · 20/07/2021 08:43

Thank you all for your advice. We managed to have two portions of chicken soup yesterday and we've had hydration sachets.

We were at an "imaginary play cafe", on Saturday with friends. Apparently it's not soft play but I'm guessing now it's the same breeding grounds for bugs - minus a ball pit. Two out of the three of their family have also been unwell.

I'm on the mend today, DH is a little queasy still, DD has been sick a few times this morning already but has been in a good mood besides that.
