This won’t ruin breastfeeding will it or irritate baby’s stomach ?

Dd is 10 months. Been BF and going fine. Weaning has gone well. But she’s too hot the last few days !!!!
Breastfeeds make her sweaty and uncomfy and then leads to restless naps and sleep 😩

She’s had the occasional bottle in the past but not much. We had a few of the aptamil 1 ready made bottles in the cupboard for emergencies.
I thought yesterday as she was so hot and grumpy I’d put one in the fridge then try her with that and she drank it all !! (It’s 7 oz in the bottle). She was cooler and then slept I think she may have been thirsty too she acted like it anyway ?

My friend who is a breastfeeding supporter said I’ve made a few mistakes that 1) it was too much I should have stopped at 4oz so this will stretch dd stomach, and 2 it will possibly upset her stomach (she seems fine but now I’m worried), that I should have pace fed (dd seemed thirsty I let her drink at her pace ) and that I should have given the right stage for her age not newborn milk …..
that she may get bottle preference (I was going to bf till 12-18 m)

So now she’s hot again and I’m thinking am I doing the wrong thing but she loved it. Have I really made all those mistakes I just thought it’s milk for babies you can surely mix and match !!!

YY - sounds like she could do with some re-training and directing to First Steps Nutrition Trust!

What you did was perfectly fine. No reason why you can’t continue to breast feed for as long as you both want with some bottles formula thrown in whenever it’s suits your baby.

The thing with the breast feeding support people is they are trained about establishing bf and newborns. Your baby is 10 months now and well established so much of what she knows won’t apply to you.

As a side note, she sounds pretty clueless about formula, stage 1 is what you should offer you baby until you transition to cows milk at 1. Stage 2 and beyond formula is completely unnecessary and invented by the formula company’s as something they could legally advertise to get their brand seen.

@TooHotForUs congratulations on getting your 10 month old to drink from a bottle, it can be hellish difficult to get a breastfed baby to switch, sounds like you're doing a great job

I think because she was so hot and liked the cold milk she was just happy to have it. I did use a fast flow teat too so it was as easy as possible for her

Your friend is not a good friend or a ‘breastfeeding supporter’ she sounds batshit

I do feel a bit judged if chatter to her for support and felt lectured and spoken down to. I did tell her this and got back a clipped ‘facts aren’t attacks’

Your friend sounds like the type of person to guilt mothers about their choices. I would imagine that can be quite harmful.

thecognoscenti · 19/07/2021 10:07

PS your baby will be absolutely, one hundred percent fine.

You friend sound a pain and unsupportive. She needs to go on a refresher course and learn about older babies breastfeeding habits too.

Don’t feel bad - you did what was best for your baby and she was clearly happy. That’s a good thing Smile Ignore your judgy friend. I bf until 2.5 years with both of mine and once weaned and bf is established your supply (should) be unaffected by changes in feeding patterns anyway. I went days sometimes towards end with my youngest of not feeding and then he’d choose to feed and had no issues. The formula you gave is the correct age as pp have said the only reason for the over 6mth one is so they can legally advertise it. You’ll still be able to
Bf and if anything it’s a positive step she’s now taken a bottle as mine never did and it was pain at times that they’d only take from breast (easier older got as could leave them with water solids and they’d be okay but they never took milk from cup or bottle so never got that if I was away for any reason).
