Plant for trellis?

I’m a completely clueless gardener. We’ve just cleared the long flower bed running the length of our garden because it was overgrown and needed sorting. Up by the house theres a couple of metres of trellis, which had hops on it which was a blooming nightmare so we cleared that too.

Ideally I’d like something that looks nice for as much of the year as possible, some flowers would be nice as you can see it from indoors. The soil by it is in the shade but the trellis itself does get the sun.

What should I plant and when do I need to plant it (not sure if you can plant all plants this time of year, do we need to wait? Told you I was clueless!)

I reckon you want clematis. They like their roots to be shaded and their tops in the sun, so your trellis sounds ideal. There are some varieties that are evergreen or semi evergreen.

A clematis would be perfect and there are so many different varieties you are sure to find one that suits. There are different types which flower at different times and have specific pruning needs, but all like their roots in shade. Best to plant in the autumn, I think.

Star jasmine would grow beautifully in the spot you describe. Evergreen and amazing scent. I agree that waiting til autumn would be best.

Thanks so much - I will have a look at both and pick a favourite to plant this autumn :)

I have tried clematis in exactly the same position you describe. Died a death. Camellias, however, have flourished and have beautiful flowers.

Actually, a climbing rose might be nice too. Again, wait until the autumn. My favourite is New Dawn, it's a beautiful palest pink.

Camellias are gorgeous but I don't think they climb. Ours are bushes.

Depends on whether your garden is north/east/south/west facing, on what kind of soil you have, how much shade, etc…

If you take a look here: www.rhsplants.co.uk you can filter (e.g.) for a quick-growing climber that likes chalky soil, is good for wildlife, is suitable for a west-facing garden, and will grow to between 5-10 m.

You can filter by

Sorry - cut off. You can also filter by plants to plant now.
