in what way do you often give yourself a little fright?

I sometimes get scared for a few seconds at night when I see a figure walking in the garden - then I realise it's me in the reflection of the glass doors🙄

Also I'm learning Spanish on Duolingo and I have to complete a lesson by midnight. about 10 mins ago I realised it was a few minutes to midnight so tried to do it quickly - turns out I'd done it already but forgot. phew

I know it can't be just me, what silly things like that do you do?

I'll be happily walking to work when I'll suddenly convince myself I've left my straighteners on or forgotten to lock the door. I know everything is almost certainly fine, but that one little moment of doubt can have me questioning everything.

I was on the phone (video call) to my mother recently. Suddenly jumped a mile and screamed.

I then had to admit I had seen something dark and furry moving across the floor... it was my 10yo DDs foot (in a sock, she hasn't got furry feet!).

Panic I've lost my car keys or phone whilst holding them

Ds has a duvet cover that has a picture of a WWE wrestler on it.
More than once I've gone I to his room at night to check on him and thought there was a man on his bed. First time I actually launched myself on poor sleeping ds.

My bathroom is downstairs so when my radio alarm goes off I have to go down for the loo/brush teeth. It always freaks me out a bit when I’ve forgotten to switch my alarm off, but put it on snooze and it kicks back in when I am walking back upstairs, especially if it switches on when the DJ is talking..

Immediate thought is always ‘shit, there’s someone in my bedroom’ rather than ‘oh, that’s the snooze on my alarm..’

I often jump at the tops off tomatoes, thinking they are a massive spider. Even when I've just taken the top off and put it there, sometimes I jump more than once at the same tomato top. I'm not even scared of spiders...

The dc had a talking toy that would randomly pipe up if no one had been near it for a while. When it happened in daylight it was just a minor irritation but alone in the house at night, I’d hear it talking from the playroom and automatically think about demonic possession.

@LarryVeest

Sometimes my hair tickles my arm and I leap up, batting it away as I think it's a spider.
I'm loving all the replies, laughing my way through them as I can identify with quite a lot! brilliant posts, thank you all. keep 'em coming!

@LarryVeest
I once had the opposite - I thought it was my hair but in fact it was a spider 😳

Fellow jumper of tops of tomatoes that look like spiders here… and also random kids toys that suddenly start up pit of nowhere after bedtime

But the worst thing - I’ve got a bedtime reminder on my phone which plays a little lullaby reminder every night. Sounds creepy as fuck like something out of weird horror film and makes me jump every time I hear it… why I’ve not turned it off I don’t know !

remembered another one:

when I wake up to pee and I'm very groggy I occasionally forget to check the toilet lid & seat positions.
which means I will either pee on the lid if it's down or fall in the bowl if the seat it is up.

When I had my wrist tattoo I used to wake up and think I had some bug/insect on my wrist

Woke up one morning and turned over, my hand hit me in the face as my arm was completely numb. Realised I had slept funny snd probably wasn't having a stroke

Not My Cat likes to appear at the window with his beady eyes late at night, or bang on the patio door. Preferably while I'm watching a horror film Hmm

NotMyCat · 18/07/2021 23:56

@onceagainaspredicted yes! I've turned the buzzer down to lowest volume and it still makes me jump
