Hi,
DD (9) has a hamster, almost one year old.
It's got a slightly bulging eye, with a white bit when it looks sidewards.
Assuming it's got an infection.
Guessing I should take it to a vet. Can't find any info on the vets4pets site about prices.

Does anyone know how much they charge for a visit?

More than your smaller independent vet also they jump to euthanasia for small animals quite quickly.

MoonbeamSprinkles · 17/07/2021 20:03

Our local one charges £30 for an appointment and then you have antibiotics etc on top of that.

I’ve had really mixed experiences with them, they are a franchise so it really depends on your local one.

Thanks for replies.
I'm assuming most vets would suggest that for a hamster but that would absolutely do my daughter in.
She adores her hamster and cares for her so well.

I've checked out my local medivet too, but again, no pricing on website at all!

I found our local Vets 4 Pets useless, they nearly killed my rabbit and I had to find a specialist. In my experience Medivet overtreat, and therefore overcharge. I know others who have found this too, and a couple of other vets (clients of mine, not vets I was paying) backed this up. A smaller independent vet tends to be better I think.

jevoudrais · 17/07/2021 20:50

My local Vets4Pets were amazing, but they sadly closed. They were cheaper than the independent vets in our area.

Beachtrip · 17/07/2021 21:02

Omg. Finding out their prices online for anywhere is a nightmare!!!
Medivet, village vet, local vet, vets4pets.
Why is their consultation fee not available online?!?

Don't touch them Vets4Pets are notorious for poor care, overcharging and slapping on as many additional extras onto a bill as they can get away with and for an excessive number of complaints and deaths.

If they were a health / medical care service for humans this place would have long since been closed down and prevented from reopening under a new name and service. It's unbelievable they are still allowed to operate at all.

Link to TrustPilot reviews which includes over one and half thousand reviews the vast majority of which are 1 star and with the same issues just repeated over and over regardless of the location and surgery practice.

Animal Trust Not for Profit or PDSA vet surgeries are generally decent and definitely safer by a long shot.

We use medivet and they are brilliant. I think you would have to call and ask for pricing.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 17/07/2021 21:48

I honestly think that you should look at vets in your local area then read the reviews. I did this and chose an independent vets near me, and they're so caring and compassionate in comparison to the Vets4Pets practice my cats were registered with before we moved. Dont get me wrong, there was nothing WRONG with them, the new vets just seem nicer in comparison. Could always be down to the induvidual vet of course!

Medivets in Leicester is £28 for a consultation
GingerAndTheBiscuits · 17/07/2021 22:37

Our vets4pets have been excellent so far and told me where to get the medication we needed online for much cheaper than their prescription prices. As a franchise I think it must vary wildly.

Beachtrip · 17/07/2021 22:51

Thanks for replies.

I've also reached out to friends locally, most seem to use the local village vet. I'm going to call before heading in.
DD has implored me to make an appointment at a time she can come with.
I'm nervous they are going to say it's not worth treating and should just put the tiny thing down.
So not ready for that!

The eye isn't too bad, just when she looks to the side you can see a bulge and some white showing, looks like the very start of an infection or cataract (yes I dr googled...)

What vets do you use? I'm trying to look for a new place just now.

jollygreenpea · 06/09/2021 20:39

This was from July, hopefully little hamster is better and playing with OP dd now.

MissDollyMix · 06/09/2021 20:57

You can have a video consultation with a vet for £24 with First Vet. We use them as part of our pet insurance and I think they’re pretty good (although better for certain things than others as obviously the vet can’t do a proper examination via a video call)

Beachtrip · 06/09/2021 21:23

I went to the local village vet, gave me antibiotics and said if it doesn't get better she needs surgery.
Cost £60!!

Hamster got better then it reappeared, however she seems fine. And I simply can't afford surgery. DD googled and satisfied herself that it's really common and hamster doesn't seem in pain so we're just leaving it!
Her coat is clean and healthy, she's going about life as normal so figure it's just an old age thing!

Could well be. Or could be any of the other tummy bugs doing the rounds. Gastroenteritis etc.
All recommend the same type of care. Rest and stay hydrated. Do you have any dioralyte (sp) in?
They are awful but usually short lived.
Feel better soon. bp diesel locations
