Cut finger on sunday, still bleeding WWYD?

I cut my finger quite badly last sunday and a friend who is a nurse advised she thought it would need stitches so took me to minor injuries whiCh is about 9 or 10 miles away. They didnt stitch it but put steri-strips on after waiting for an hour for it to stop bleeding (this was about 6 hours after I did it) . And put a large dressing on it. They said to go back on wednesday to change the dressing.

When I returned on Wednesday it had bled onto the steri-strips quite a lot and 2 nurses were debating whether to take them off or leave them. They decided to leave them and put another dressing on, and advised me to take them off Friday (yesterday) I left it til the evening and took the dressing off, but thought I would wait til this morning to take the steri-strips off and just covered with a normal plaster. But overnight its bled through the plaster....so I'm not sure whether to leave on for longer, as its obviously not healed fully or do I need to go back? What are they likely to do? They wouldnt stitch it a week later would they?

It's a week on nearly. Go back and ask why they won't stitch it. They may have a reason why they aren't?

They didn't mention at the time, I just thought it was probably cheaper and quicker to do steri strips?
DH just said I should change the plaster and let the air get to it although he has been pretty dismissive of it since the start but I'm worried it might be prone to infection.

Sounds like it could need stitches. Go back and get it checked out. Get in there early though!

They’re very unlikely to stitch it after this length of time, usually the cut off for stitches is 12-24 hours. Steri-strips are also a good alternative to sutures which can be equally effective at closing the wound but are quicker and easier to administer, have lower infection rate and leave less scarring. Sutures wouldn’t necessarily have closed the wound any more effectively.

Some bleeding from wounds even after they’ve been stitched/ steri-stripped is normal. The advice is usually to leave steri-strips on for 5-7 days so if the wound is still bleeding a bit today I would wait until Sunday to remove them. Don’t pull them off but soak them in water first.

Thank you @BillyIsMyBunny
What sort of dressing should I put on afterwards? After what period of time should it not be bleeding?
My job is practical and quite dirty/dusty so I'm concerned that I dont want it to get dirt in it when not properly healed.

Not taking aspirin are you?

Yuckyfinger · 17/07/2021 08:36

No, not taking anything (I took 2 paracetamol the day I did it)

It may be that the dressing is making it too soggy so it can't adhere. My daughter had this issue after a deep cut on her thumb and it turns out they should have redressed it with a dry dressing after a few days. She ended up having to go to burns unit for treatment. Not medically trained... Just sounds similar.

Update (dont read if you're eating!!Envy)
I called the hospital and they said go in and get checked. They took the steri-strips off but saw that a long jagged bit of skin had sort of tucked under itself and she had to open it up with tweezers and straighten it (ouch Sad - and more bleeding) before securing with more steri strips. She said it wouldnt have healed like that so glad I got checked.

Might be worth checking your ferritin/iron levels. If you are anemic that can cause clotting issues

They can’t stitch a wound a week later, not even a day later!

Can you try liquid skin?

Yuckyfinger · 17/07/2021 14:13

@User5827372728

I was fairly sure they wouldnt.
They put new steri strips on so should be ok now.
