Hi all, if you are in the southern half of England, you can see the space station passing over tonight very soon.
Timing for London is 11.32pm for 7 minutes, and again an hour and a half later at 1.08am for 7 minutes. Travelling W to E.
Smile

I used to live taking the dc out to watch this when they were small

Any early Perseids spotted yet?

Catawaul · 16/07/2021 05:41

Yes, I did - saw it the night before too.

It can be seen again tonight at 10.44pm, and again at 12.21am.

Saturday 11.34pm
Sunday 10.47pm

There are other times, but they are probably the best ones.

Perseid shower starts today 16th July and continues to its peak on the night between 12/13 August, finishing 23rd August.

I shall probably be found standing in the middle of the playing fields up the road, late at night, staring upwards in vain... Grin

ahoyshipmates · 17/07/2021 23:45

@pitterpatterrain Amazing isn't it? Over 17,000 miles an hour, and they'll be round the world and back again in 90 minutes...

We wave to it Blush

How can you see it?

pitterpatterrain · 17/07/2021 23:48

It is amazing - and pretty meditative watching it smoothly go over

It must really change your view of earth going into space

pitterpatterrain · 17/07/2021 23:50

ItsVousNotMoi for me (London) it’s gone now - roughly around the timing I look out for a bright dot / star in the sky that is steadily moving from West to East - doesn’t flash like an aeroplane etc

@IRanSoFarAway1

Oh....I thought I saw this about an hour ago! Is that possible? I just thought I must be wrong as I hadn't heard anything about it.
It circumnavigates the Earth every 90 minutes or so, and is visible in the UK fairly regularly. It has to be the right time of day, either just after dark or just before dawn, when the sky looks dark to us, and the sun is still shining on it, lighting it up. The orbit isn't always over us as it is now, but it has been visible several times over the last few days.

Next opportunity is tonight at around 10.47pm, travelling from west to east and it takes several minutes to cross the sky. It looks like a star.

Thank you for this. I can't seem to get the spot the station emails anymore. I've tried to renew a couple of times but I never get the alerts.

DanFmDorking · 23/07/2021 22:16

@megletthesecond - I've never bothered with the emails - I just check whenever I remember or lookout when someone else starts an ISS thread - thank you @ahoyshipmates

Too cloudy for me tonight though

We've just seen it outside DDs bedroom window. She's 10 and having a late night as her cousin is here for a sleepover. It's really amazing stuff! thanks for the heads up. Smile
