Holidaying with sen children

Inspired by the other thread about holidays, I've thought again about what I could do to get away with the dc this summer. However, ds9 has asd and won't cope with unpredictability, and must have access to a screen. And I'm a lone parent. What sort of holidays do others in this position take? Or do you not even attempt it?! We had 2 nights in a holiday park at half term and it was a bit of a disaster as there was no WiFi... Shock

I'm thinking of 3 nights around 13th August and we're in East anglia. Budget is up to £650 ish. If anyone wants to look! Grin

Center parks. Hoseasons lodges have WiFi too.
Clearly always go somewhere with WiFi.

What about this caravan in Clacton? Has free wifi included, £100 a night, and currently available for the dates you want:

That's where we went! WiFi is only in the village square Confused I agree though, it is lovely

Looks really interesting, thanks. They're not available for the summer anymore but I'll keep it in mind for the future.

Thank you for looking. I'm not sure about a caravan again. I get a bit lonely Blush

We stay in a cottage with Wi-Fi though we can cope with a weekend without (astonishingly, we were surprised). DS likes being outside and likes animals, so that helps.

Misty9 · 17/07/2021 10:22

I've decided that staying with family is the safest bet! At least I'll have other adults to talk to! And WiFi Grin

We'd last 5 minutes with any of our family - you're lucky to have accepting family members.

Hen2018 · 17/07/2021 10:33

Trains.

Go on holiday on a train. Sit in the station watching the trains come and go. Go on a steam train....

And WiFi.

My family think my son has no SEND (he hasn’t been in mainstream school since he was 8....) so holidays do not involve them.

Misty9 · 17/07/2021 10:38

It's not my immediate family...

drspouse · 17/07/2021 11:07

My extended family would not be much better even though some are understanding. Less likely to tell us we should control him but more likely to plan surprise mass visits/visits to places we can't manage.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 17/07/2021 11:15

WIfi shouldn't be such an issue, get a Mifi device and a data SIM (Three are good); then you only need good mobile phone coverage.

QueenofBrickdon · 17/07/2021 11:31

Are there any support groups in your area? We once went on a holiday with our local one funded by a specialist inclusion project run by the council.
It was at an outdoor activity centre and was amazing. Brilliant activities and other families facing similar issues to talk to.

drspouse · 17/07/2021 11:38

I have heard of one near us actually - our DS tends to fall into too disabled for most things but not disabled enough for SEN things.

Horst · 17/07/2021 11:43

Try landal. We stayed on one of their sites and each lodge has its own wifi and smart tv. We took an Xbox and it all ran perfectly.

notthemum · 17/07/2021 12:05

How old is your son ?

notthemum · 17/07/2021 12:06

Sorry, that was to Hen2018

cookiesandcreamm · 17/07/2021 12:10

You can buy a wifi dongle op!

Maggiesfarm · 17/07/2021 16:36

Thanks for that cookes! I've been saying and writing 'd**rongle' for years. Nobody has corrected me, possibly because they thought it was funny, but I will not make the same mistake again. I have no experience of a dongle which might explain it.

😂 Mind I'm one of those people who don't correct either! I enjoy a giggle to myself when they continue to say it wrong.
Hen2018 · 17/07/2021 16:53

In answer to your question (just spotted it) he’s 17, but I’ve been a lone parent for 16 of those years.
