Have you ever been annoyed/irritated by your child's school report/teacher?

Not at your child obviously. But more at the report and thought Jesus which clown has written this? Does he/she even know my child? I honestly look at some reports and honestly they're so subjective rather than facts obviously. Even my own reports I used to open them and feel so disappointed as a child at the crap that was written about me. Secondary school reports are okay I guess but primary school ones...not so great. Same with parents day. Have you ever clashed with a teacher or corrected them to say err hang on what are you on about?

Strange post and thanks for the criticism.

tinkerbellvspredator · 15/07/2021 22:58

Both my kids primary reports have been really personal and accurate. Have had a total of 9 reports.

theluckiest · 15/07/2021 22:59

Wow.

I really hope you're not one of the parents at my school.

I spend literally weeks writing reports in between my other duties. Oh, and teaching.
Every single one is personal and tailored to the individual child, proofread, checked and double checked before I sign it off.

So in a word, no.

Same as mnistooaddictive

theluckiest · 15/07/2021 23:01

Oh and I'm very surprised that 'primary - not so much.'

I have worked with the small people in my care for hours, days, months. I know them inside out and back to front by now.

Some teachers in secondary may only see your child once a week.

CassandraTrotter · 15/07/2021 23:03

You've corrected a teacher on how your child works in school, because you know better? Ok.

Bananacocks · 15/07/2021 23:04

I'm a bit annoyed they spelt his name wrong on the front of it, but the contents is pretty accurate I think

Xmasbaby11 · 15/07/2021 23:05

Once when dd was in y2 and there were just a few general comments, I was disappointed. But the original teacher had left and then it was just supply teachers, so it wasn't anyone's fault.

I really appreciate the detail and thought put into school reports and I thanked my children's teachers for it this week. They have been amazing in such a tough year.

NoYOUbekind · 15/07/2021 23:06

yep. I raised low marks for 'effort' every single year in both primary and secondary as giving my autistic DS low marks for effort took no account of the extraordinary effort he was putting in to actually attend school in the first place. It never improved, mind you,

Then over lockdown I put in an official complaint about a particular subject teacher (secondary by this point) because they cut and pasted their comments from one report to another, But I had challenged and raised the original posts ant an IEP meeting and got them minuted as unhelpful, unsupportive and inaccurate.

I suspect I'm probably 'that' parent. But my best friend is a primary teacher and I see the effort she puts into creating individualised reports every year and yeah, I actually expect the same for my kid.

Vallmo47 · 15/07/2021 23:07

In my experience it is the absolute opposite - primary aged children receiving detailed, amazing reports with some real reflections. Secondary teachers sending out a 3 sentences email going ‘yeah he’s doing good, keep it up!’ I know it’s been hard lately but come on. It’s clear in secondary the teachers don’t know the students as such.

Mintjulia · 15/07/2021 23:09

My ds's reports have, in general, been pretty accurate. His teachers seem to know him fairly well.
Have I ever felt irritated by a teacher...ooh yes.

Ds's primary head was a small-minded spiteful cliquey b*ch and by yr 6 sports day, I would happily have punched her on the nose.
I've never hit anyone but, my God, she deserved it.

She's still out there somewhere, undermining and belittling and making dcs' lives a misery. Hopefully someone senior at the LEA will eventually work it out and fire her.

NavigationCentral · 15/07/2021 23:09

Just received end of reception report. Such a thorough, thoughtful, detailed, accurate account. So grateful for such great teachers.

OldScrappyAndHungry · 15/07/2021 23:09

Ah yes that parent who knows that their child is completely different to the one we see in school - always a joy Hmm.

boomwhacker · 15/07/2021 23:11

I was pissed off by DD2's report last summer which was written and sent in July after schools had been closed since March. The school had set literally no work and had no idea of what amazing progress my dd has made with me homeschooling her. The report was complete rubbish and no reflection at all on her abilities or level at that time. I have no idea why they bothered writing it to be honest.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 15/07/2021 23:11

Snap, TheLuckiest.
This last batch of reports was started last term, each report took approximately 90 minutes to write, and included observations on learning both in school and remotely, each child's unique talents and what they have brought to the learning environment this year. It is meant to be a positive, comprehensive and informative report, building on the conversations I have had with parents about their child's learning through the year, so no surprises.
Your post reeks of disdain for the professionals who educate and care for your children.

copernicium · 15/07/2021 23:11

Only in a "who is this child, can he be like this at home" kind of way...

But we haven't had any this year, as it's been a busy year Hmm

danadas · 15/07/2021 23:13

My youngests made me chuckle this year. It started off with his name and then switched to the name of a girl in his class. I presume the teacher replaced the first instance of the name instead of all in the cut and paste job. Grin

PinkYarrow · 15/07/2021 23:13

No I've never clashed with a teacher at parents' eve or seen anyone else do so. It's not an appropriate way to raise a concern.

BluebellsGreenbells · 15/07/2021 23:20

I have.

My child is a disability and it’s obvious the teachers have no idea. It reads if only DS could do Y or try harder at X - he can’t …. It’s not going to happen, no ones more frustrated than he is.

Shame on them really. And yes I’ve men ironed it to the head of year -

At no point does a physically disabled child’s report contain ‘could run faster in the cross country, refuses try the hurdles, or similar’

2tired2bewitty · 15/07/2021 23:21

Apart from parent’s evening once in reception where the teacher got her notes in a muddle and started to tell us about a different child, I’ve always felt that reports and conversations have accurately reflected my children, even the one when dd had only been in the school for three weeks!

couchparsnip · 15/07/2021 23:25

Just got DDs secondary report. No perosnal words at all - just scores and rank orders.
I hate this kind of report.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 15/07/2021 23:30

I have the same disagreement with all the professionals in my son's life.
Basically I think he's the best little guy that ever lived.
And they insist on seeing him a slightly undersized kid with borderline speech and language difficulties, poor motor skills who is "not on track" for phonics or maths.

faithfulbird20 · 15/07/2021 23:30

@NoYOUbekind I totally agree. Its heartbreaking when you know your child isn't being supported but an unfair judgement is made that is no way a reflection on your child.

Apologies to the teachers who make a real effort. But unfortunately not everyone does.

Not my child’s but mine when I was at high school. I always look and laugh even now. My sociology teacher was a melt, an actual dickhead. He was shit, no one learnt anything and so we just used to mess around in class, of course me being the class clown got in trouble the most and he’d often ring home but with me intercepting the calls as my mum was busy. Then I get the reports which states I’m an upstanding member of the group who causes no issues, I’m keen to learn...etc etc... the biggest load of bull I’ve ever read. I called him up on it one time in class and he totally avoided the question and went beet red.

Timeisavirtue · 15/07/2021 23:33

My daughters teacher did a very personal report and had me laughing at some of it. He was describing my daughters school personality because she has a totally different one at home.
