You can always spend too much money on....

Based on another thread about what you can "never" spend too much money on, all I could think of is what people spend too much money on when they don't need too.. my list is as follows:

Loo roll - it basically does not matter unless it is the weird paper stuff we used to have at school
Any branded cupboard staples - I can never understand why people would buy a branded product like flour, pasta, salt, cornflakes, teabags, salt, sugar etc - it is what it is regardless of the name on the front.
Handbags - now I like a good handbag, think LK Bennett, or Ralph Lauren but I simply don't get the £££ on some really high end designers that you put in a dust bag and leave in the cupboard for 363 days of the year.
Shower gel - it washes you. I cannot get the difference between Molton Brown (£21 a bottle) versus a supermarket brand for £1 a bottle.
Washing up liquid - they all do the same thing
Weddings - especially flowers.. Nah,
Cars - I do remember a relative of mine buying a £50k car. I bought a £25k car and both of them did exactly the same thing (apart from drive) and had exactly the same gadgets. One was a Range Rover and one was a Kia.
Dogs - my very hard up friend who I subsidised during lockdown just bought a 2k puppy. What about battersea dogs home? a companion for life for free?

arrghh..

I disagree on some of your cupboard staples. Different teas taste hugely different. Also cornflakes, own brand is fine but basics are like an entirely different product. Pasta, we usually have own brand but on the rare occasion we get the expensive one it feels like a real treat, it’s a completely different texture and taste.

ForeverSinging · 15/07/2021 20:56

I disagree on toilet roll. It really makes a difference.

OoglyMoogly · 15/07/2021 20:56

Teabags and corn flakes are different. I've drunk a lot of tea over the years and Yorkshire Tea is the only one I drink now. As is Kelloggs Cornflakes. Supermarket own brands for those products are vastly inferior.

8monthsinandcranky · 15/07/2021 21:11

Oh god have you actually tried cheap own brand loo roll?
Having given birth very recently (2 in 2 years) I can tell you now, my piles can’t deal with Asda’s own loo roll Grin

AnonymousUser12 · 15/07/2021 21:12

I couldn't disagree more on the toilet roll! Don't get me wrong nothing posher than Andrex but god I couldn't use cheap!
Food bags
Plates and cups.

Gladioli23 · 15/07/2021 21:15

Teabags are a total variable depending what you buy!

Pasta I am happy to buy cheaper stuff but the different shapes do make a difference to what you cook and you can't get the cheaper stuff in many shapes so if I want another shape I will buy more expensive stuff.

And washing up liquid: some non-main-brand washing up liquid is fine but some of the really cheap stuff just doesn't have enough surfactant in it to actually get grease off plates... It's not economising if it costs half the price but you use 3x as much!

Dalooah · 15/07/2021 21:15

I think everything has varying degrees of quality up to a certain point and then you're just paying money for pretty colours and branding etc.

I think branded makes a difference for some things and a simple label comparison or actual product comparison will tell all.

I've had my washing machine 10 years and so far so good, still going strong but I paid x2 what a friend paid for hers but she's on her 3rd one in 10 years. Same sort of thing.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 15/07/2021 21:16

The Kia won't go up a 45 degree slope.

Teenangels · 15/07/2021 21:16

I have to disagree on all your examples, they are all the things I can't go cheap on.
I can washing powder, that seems to be all the same, as are tinned tomatoes but pasta, tea are completely different.
My bags are an investment and I change them everyday.

@8monthsinandcranky The thought of cheap toilet roll after just giving birth is horrific 🤣🙈 my hospital had the stuff that comes out the dispenser in single squares 😐😬
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/07/2021 21:17

You lost me when 25k on a car to you is frugal- bet my 5k car does the same as your 25k, which both do the same as my sisters £450 car

FizzyPink · 15/07/2021 21:17

Bubble bath. DP is obsessed with buying me expensive bubble bath. It’s lovely but I’m equally happy with the £1 bottles of Radox so I do wish he wouldn’t waste his money.

Teenangels · 15/07/2021 21:17

@VeniVidiWeeWee

The Kia won't go up a 45 degree slope.
No it won't and I have yet to find them with cooking seats which believe me are the best thing ever.
thebear1 · 15/07/2021 21:17

Some cupboard staples do taste different or are different quality. I buy a lot of own brand but cheaper tea bags make awful tea. Also some cheap washing up liquid is so weak its a false economy.

Teenangels · 15/07/2021 21:20

Bloody cooling seats, stupid auto fucking correct

Hellcatspangle · 15/07/2021 21:25

Teabags?! Are you mad? There is no way in the world teabags all taste the same. Yorkshire all the way!

FedNlanders · 15/07/2021 21:28

Bleach/disinfectant etc

TheNameTheWebsiteForgot · 15/07/2021 22:25

Disagree with you on many counts.

Chewbecca · 15/07/2021 22:29

Tinned tomatoes don’t all taste the same, the cheaper ones can be very acidic.

I disagree with a lot of OP’s list tbh. I don’t want cheap loo roll, tea bags or cereal in particular.

Cars, weddings and handbags are not essentials so you spend on them whatever you want to.

Bells3032 · 15/07/2021 22:30

Deff disagree with you on toilet paper. I think you can never spend too much on toilet paper or tissues.

Handbags I agree with you on though. My £20 handbag does the same as my sisters £1500 hand bag and actually has broken less

HerBigChance · 15/07/2021 22:33

Agree that there is a world of difference between tea bags, but tea leaves are a step up again. Far superior.

Mansplainee · 15/07/2021 22:33

Need to show my DH this thread. He refuses to use any shower gel except for Aesop which is £30 a bottle. I use own brand.

Mansplainee · 15/07/2021 22:34

You’re completely wrong about teabags though

Nohomemadecandles · 15/07/2021 22:35

Buy the best tinned tomatoes you can afford! The difference is incredible.

Shmithecat2 · 15/07/2021 22:39

Loo roll - it basically does not matter unless it is the weird paper stuff we used to have at school

Nonsense. It's not posh, but Aldi Aloe Vera or Coconut oil paper is lovely.
Any branded cupboard staples - I can never understand why people would buy a branded product like flour, pasta, salt, cornflakes, teabags, salt, sugar etc - it is what it is regardless of the name on the front.

Nope. There are superior teas. Twinings Every Day being one of them.

Handbags - now I like a good handbag, think LK Bennett, or Ralph Lauren but I simply don't get the £££ on some really high end designers that you put in a dust bag and leave in the cupboard for 363 days of the year.

Each to their own.

Shower gel - it washes you. I cannot get the difference between Molton Brown (£21 a bottle) versus a supermarket brand for £1 a bottle.

A little bit of indulgence isn't a bad thing

Washing up liquid - they all do the same thing

Nope. Some are absolutely useless. Fairy Anti bac all the way.

Weddings - especially flowers.. Nah,

Again, it's such a personal thing. My wedding was about £3k, and I didn't have any flowers. But I wouldn't begrudge those who did.

Cars - I do remember a relative of mine buying a £50k car. I bought a £25k car and both of them did exactly the same thing (apart from drive) and had exactly the same gadgets. One was a Range Rover and one was a Kia.

Again, Nope. Pretty sure the RR out performs the Kia, and has a lot more extras. I appreciate those extras. I love heated seats, a superior sound system, auto lights, wipers, sensors, a few more
BHP, air suspension etc.

Dogs - my very hard up friend who I subsidised during lockdown just bought a 2k puppy. What about battersea dogs home? a companion for life for free?

Agreed.
