Digital gift card for a foodie?!

name6785 · 15/07/2021 10:52

I want to buy my mentor a gift card to thank him for his support in me getting a promotion. I don't know his address so I need to be able send it via email. I know he's a foodie and likes alcohol (!) any suggestions, I'm struggling.

Not sure what your actual question is, but I hate getting gift cards. I'd much prefer something tangible.

name6785 · 15/07/2021 11:20

Well I've just said it needs to be sent digitally, so tangible is out.

Do you know his favourite restaurant? Lots of larger restaurants will do e-gift vouchers - Dishoom for example do. I would steer away from the food experiences though - afternoon tea etc. Through like Virgin etc. as usually the places doing them aren’t the sort of places “foodies” would usually go…

I bet you could find his address quite easily if you wanted to.

name6785 · 15/07/2021 11:45

@MrsFin I don't want to, we work in data protection, it somewhat defeats the point of him helping me get promoted in data protection if I then contravene it to get his address...and I don't want to ask him for it as frankly I don't need to know it. A digital gift card is a perfectly nice and suitable gesture, even if you wouldn't like it!

I've asked a simple question! Thanks to the others who have answered it

Amazon have all sorts of gourmet food available, I’d send an Amazon e-voucher, and say in your message that you hope he spends it on a food treat.
While restaurant vouchers are lovely, an Amazon voucher would be more flexible, especially as you can’t be sure of his personal circumstances.

Good luck in your new job! 🥂 🍾

This is a great idea. I'm a massive foodie and would love this. I'd love any of the following:

a hamper of goodies from Waitrose, Harvey Nicks etc (not sure how easy to do this at this time of year, as it's perhaps more a Christmas thing)

a voucher for a lunch/afternoon tea/dinner at a good restaurant (not necessarily Michelin star but a nice gastropub or similar, not a chain). As a PP said, buy direct, not through any of the crap Virgin/Groupon places

possibly a voucher for somewhere like SousChef - if he also likes cooking there are loads of brilliant, slightly niche ingredients there

a voucher for a dining-at-home experience from a nice restaurant - some have stopped doing this now that restaurants are open again but plenty are still doing weekly deliveries - or look at a site like Dishpatch which has various restaurants to choose from. A voucher for there would be brilliant.

if he likes alcohol, maybe a day on a wine course kind of thing, although those might still be a bit restricted.

I didn't mean by illegal means!

I bet someone you work with will know where he lives. Or ask him under the guise of something else.
Or there's always the phone book.

LadyJaye · 15/07/2021 17:56

Fortnum & Mason's do egift cards, from £50 to silly money, and can be sent digitally.

name6785 · 15/07/2021 18:58

Thanks everyone, some really good ideas! Didn't know Amazon did gourmet food (don't know why, they do everything else!)

@MrsFin

What is wrong with you? OP isn't interested in sending a present. OP wants to send a digital food voucher. It's not too difficult to understand, is it?

PridefulIdiot · 15/07/2021 19:16

Home-X do some great things and deliver nationwide.

BashStreet1 · 15/07/2021 19:23

How much are you looking to spend?

Sharing a colleague's home address without asking them for their permission would be breaking data protection rules, as would obtaining information for one purpose and using it for another.
poblwc · 15/07/2021 19:28

I'd second dishoom - we've had some lovely meals from there with gift cards from my mum. There's quite a few different restaurants on their so should be something he fancies.

BashStreet1 · 15/07/2021 19:55

A meal delivery from a decent restaurant- like aktar at home (Michelin star Indian restaurant, delivers uk wide- I had their curry box and it's amazing), Steins at home (Rick Stein) etc.

BashStreet1 · 15/07/2021 19:57

The aktar one you can get an e-voucher delivered to your mentor's work email.

ODFOx · 15/07/2021 19:57

I'd go Waitrose if he's in England: they are the best for unusual spice mixes and less common wines and are ubiquitous.
More specialist suppliers are more expensive than them so a voucher will get him more of what he likes!

PeanutButter82 · 15/07/2021 20:14

I second someone's previous suggestion of Sous-Chef voucher - they have some really unusual ingredients and it would look like you've really thought about getting something personal (without actually getting something personal!).

KupoNutCoffee · 15/07/2021 21:17

Perhaps a membership to taste card or gourmet society. Depends on their area as to if its any good but you dont need a full address to check, just a rough area.

That way you're not tying them to a particular restaurant or having to worry the place might go bust. But if they like trying new, different restaurants then it could easily be a gift that keeps giving.

JingsMahBucket · 15/07/2021 21:58

@name6785 I highly recommend a gift card for Field & Flower. Their steaks and other meats are good quality. www.fieldandflower.co.uk/
